Joe Pye seedling

I have a seedling of 'Chocolate' Joe Pye that has turned into a nice little plant, it's blooming right now and seems to have come true to its parent. Anyway, should I dig it and move now or wait until spring?

this plant is fairly indestructable. if you don't have ten thousand of them in the next 2 yrs i'll be surprised. move it now; no worries. btw, it happily takes a good amt of shade.

Kate, your post didn't list the number of feet. Thansk for the input, everyone. Maybe I will leave it where it is this year to see what it does first. Assuming it is not too hard to move when it is 2 years old. When I googled it I saw a picture in someoneÂs garden where they had harnessed it into being tall and thin with double plant rings. ThatÂs something that could work too in that place in my garden. ItÂs more the spread IÂm concerned about, as my garden is an island bed and there is no more horizontal space. I planted it as a backdrop for some wine-colored daylilies, but whether it will bloom at the same time I have no clue.

it gets huge. at least 5'. We had this exact conversation 2 years ago, but its gone now. I tried pinching mine early in the season as an experiment to keep the size in check, but it didn't work out. It delayed them way too long and they were too small. I divided and moved mine last fall to at least be in back of the border so the height didn't block out other things. And it is pretty and a butterfly magnet, but watch out! This is in August where the section on the left was not cut back. The two sections on the right were cut back. Not sure just when. Its written down somewehre.

I have E. purpurea ssp. maculatum (Spotted Joe Pye Weed) and mine did bloom first year from ws'n seed (the lone survivor of 5 seedlings). It wasn't spectacular though and plants were only about 16" tall...bloom occurred just before the first frost and they never had a chance. One of the slowest perennials I've ever grown. Last year was a little better...more blooms at about 4.5' tall. I'm sure if I gave it all the water it wants to grow best it could have been much taller! This year should be a good one:D BTW this one was planted in one location that first spring and after making a new bed that fall I transplanted it there in early October. Haven't transplanted a large mature one so can't comment on that. I do hear that some people go around the crown in spring or fall with a spade and remove pieces from the side to divide/maintain size and plant up removed sections. That isn't taking the whole mother plant out of the ground so I assume it must have a extensive root system or it's just the ease of the method?

I have a few short Joe Pye's too (can't remember which one) and have never had BFs on them that I know of...they are nice for late season bloom, though... I wonder if you need a whole small field of Joe Pye to catch the interest of the butterflies...? I planted the white eupatorium (although I think they've changed the names on these again) and I haven't seen BFs on that either. And I have lots of that growing around here.

Oh Mindy, how I wish it reseeded in my gardens as you say. I've had a plant for the last 4 years and have yet to see a seedling. :O( What's up with thet, eh??? :O)

I'm redoing a bed right now and will be dividing my plant into three. It's at the front and I need it's darker hue at the back. Even though it's starting to bloom it's being moved today before Hurricane Kyle hits. No worries!

I wish mine would reseed too. Five years in my garden and have never found a single seedling. I've wondered if it's because it's such a late bloomer that the seed doesn't have time to ripen in my zone 4 garden.

No reseeding in my gardens either. I have collected seed and wintersown it with success.

I believe it reseeded like mad in my garden. I planted it last year, and it doesn't get all that much sun either. There's a heck of alot more of it this year. I'll investigate further, brain cells permitting. I'd wait until the spring to move it...

well now, THIS is quite a switcheroo for me. when everyone else is seeing tons of reseeding/success with their echinacea,or coreopsis or achillea, and I cannot GROW the darn things.....
i alw thought it was a need for good drainage on the part of the eupat.choc. because mine constantly overwhelm the edges of our dug-down paths. but maybe it's moisture that it loves.....(Interestingly, the eupatorium Gateway does NOT seed around for me.)

i do wish youall were neighbors; you'd have PLENTY whenever you wanted.

My wild Joe Pye doesn't seem to seed down either. The plant has grown taller and just a bit wider over all these years, but I've not seen any seedlings.
