Joe Pye Weed 'Baby Joe'

I just purchased and planted Baby Joe today. The tag says it grows to 30". It is 30" at planting so I hope the tag is wrong. I do want a dwarf Joe Pye weed, but I am hoping for around 4ft. Does anyone have experience with this variety?

Nope. But, I do have experience with 'Gate Way, which is probably the size you want--4-6 ft.'

I have Little Joe that I planted last year and it is 5ft.

Yup, I went to a garden center today, and saw a "Little Joe" Pye Weed with toothed leaves. The tall garden phlox, though, looked just like my mystery plant. I guess the leaves lost their variegation? Thx for the help.

Kate, your post didn't list the number of feet. Thansk for the input, everyone. Maybe I will leave it where it is this year to see what it does first. Assuming it is not too hard to move when it is 2 years old. When I googled it I saw a picture in someoneÂs garden where they had harnessed it into being tall and thin with double plant rings. ThatÂs something that could work too in that place in my garden. ItÂs more the spread IÂm concerned about, as my garden is an island bed and there is no more horizontal space. I planted it as a backdrop for some wine-colored daylilies, but whether it will bloom at the same time I have no clue.

Baby Joe is supposed to be shorter than Little Joe. My Baby Joe is blooming now and a little over four feet tall. We've had a good gardening year though. I think it was shorter last year. It's nice to have it short enough so that you can see the butterflies landing on it. The bad news is that it's not attracting butterflies very well, at least not for me. Maybe they just haven't noticed it yet.

I have a few short Joe Pye's too (can't remember which one) and have never had BFs on them that I know of...they are nice for late season bloom, though...

I wonder if you need a whole small field of Joe Pye to catch the interest of the butterflies...?

I planted the white eupatorium (although I think they've changed the names on these again) and I haven't seen BFs on that either. And I have lots of that growing around here.
