Gean and Florence, in particular, I responded to your e-mails. Not sure why you are not getting them. It seems to be a glitch here at GW for a while now. I apologize. Things are better, much better and thank you for caring.

Wishing you the same, Patricia. Today especially I was thinking of how very privileged we are to live in this wonderful country, even with all its flaws. The four months I spent in India years ago forever burned into my consciousness how different we are from millions who are less fortunate, and I never cease to be grateful that I and my loved ones are fortunate enough to be able to spend our lives here.

Thank you for the Independence Day wishes and I'm glad to hear you're doing better.

I like what you said, Ingrid. I especially love that sentence in the Declaration of Independence: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

Because we are all created equal and in the image of our Creator, we have the responsibility to treat each other with respect, knowing that we are all entitled to pursue life, liberty and happiness. Our freedoms to worship God and to pursue our dreams are precious indeed.

Hi FL good to hear from you again. I am so glad the seeds grew and you have a tree coming along. It is, as you said, a dwarf orchid tree, bauhinia amaculata, I believe, not the huge white orchid tree you usually see around here. I grew mine from seed as well. There is also bauhinia Mexicana, that is similar. And a red one bauhinia galapinii that hasn't bloomed for me yet and also a dwarf. The red one is more like a bush, then the others. I am having a little more trouble training it to be a tree. :o) Your stitch work is lovely. I haven't done any in years now.

Thank you Kate for posting this document. I have no memory of ever reading it, although it must have been in my grade school history books. It is amazing to contemplate what those people must have lived through. And that the United States of America was created from a group of brave people who united for a common cause-freedom from tyranny and oppression. I love that the "pursuit of happiness" is one of the rights they were willing to fight and die for. What an amazing thought and perhaps never spoken before. That people have the right to be happy. Happy 4th to you, too! Hope your's is just what you want it to be. We're not doing much celebrating. A quiet evening at home would be Heavenly to me. We grilled some burgers and had a huge salad with everything I could think of in it. Yummy. Just couldn't resist sharing DS's contribution to my July 4th table! He was so proud of his idea and said for me to make sure to tell y'all that he thought it up!! I'll make him a tablescaper yet!! Betty

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all! I really love to see these types of examples of what is right with our world. Yesterday, a local family's home burned leaving a family of 5 displaced with no belongings. Before the family was finished talking to the fire department, volunteers were arriving with clothing, new Christmas presents for the kids, food and an offer to let the family use a travel trailer as temporary housing.
