WS radishes?

SO -- I just bought a package of radish seed. Since they grow so fast, and they're small, do you think I could wintersow 1 seed per cup and just leave them in there until ready to eat?

Just curious :)

A radish will take up a 1" space when it's grown (at least) so you would be planting one seed per cup or so!
I find radish and other root veggies are best sown right in the ground they are to grow in.

I was going to try something similar.

I figured radish seeds are cheap, and my girls LOVE them.

They grow so quickly, though, anyway, I'm not sure it's worth a ton of extra effort to have the radishes at eating size a few days early. But at the same time, come spring we are all sooooo desperate to eat something out of the garden!

I was going to purchase some of those boxes that you can hang over a deck railing this week, and WS the radishes in there. When the weather starts to warm, I can just hang them up in the right position on the deck railings.

Hopefully, we can harvest those radishes earlier than the ones we will be direct sowing, and then use the boxes to plant out some of my WS herbs so I have them handy to the kitchen! Maybe even some of the Mesclun for quick sandwiches.

Hmm - I may experiment with WS one of the boxes with the radishes and herbs together - if all goes well, I can be harvesting the radishes while the herbs are small, and they will then have the space to spread out. . .

This feels like the sort of thing that will work some years, (like warmer early springs) and not others (like this one is shaping up to be)

We'll see!

Hi Alicia! I'm also new to this - same as you, I had a big veggie garden last year, and this year decided to WS a number of things for the first time. Anyway, I can't give you really any answers because I'm also new to this, but I do have some of the same questions as you! I'm also curious about WSing carrots. The weather this year is SO tricky. I think everyone is really confused and unsure. Quite the year for us to be getting into winter sowing! Welcome!

Here's my two cents: Allium family (onions, shallots, garlic, chives) Onions and Chives have WSed well for me. Haven't sown the others before. Beans-- I have WSed them, but kinda debate which is easier for me, to direct sow or WS. But they WS great. Beets -- Definitely. Brassica family -Spinach, Kale, Collards WS like crazy for me. Broccoli worked for me last year (but I lack the knowledge of how to grow it. Didn't get a decent enough head on it, perhaps due to very wet summer. Carrots--I will probably always WS these. It's easier for me to separate the seedlings and plunk them in at a particular distance from each other than it is for me to seed and then thin out. They WS great for me and I can pull up carrots even in the dead of winter. I am a BIG FAN of WSing root veggies Celery- haven't yet, but am doing this year Corn- I only did an ornamental type, which did WS well. Curcubit family-I have WSed them, but I personally prefer sowing indoors or direct sowing. Only because I have a hard time putting a small container of seed outdoors and having it survive. Herbs-- this is probably your most variable category. It depends on the herb as to how it will WS for you. For me, it's down to timing (whether I put the seeds out in winter or in spring). Leafy Greens-excellent. Lettuces,Spinach, Chard, Bok Choy...they do fantastic and are often the first things to sprout for me. Nightshade family (eggplant, tomatoes, peppers, potatoes - from real seeds....not "seed potatoes" ;-) No experience with potatoes, but eggplant and peppers I sow indoors because our season isn't long enough here. My tomatoes, however are outside right now. They WS great. Parsnip- as a root veggie it probably would do well. Rutabegas are in that family and they did very well for me last year. Peas- These I direct sow...it's easier for me. Radishes- They WS very well Spinach- Most definintely WS's well. Linda

I plant them out by small HOS, and they push out from the middle of the hunk and fill the surrounding soil.

Thanks -- I'm really just trying to save space in the veggie garden. I might try both ways and see what happens!

Sowing radishes in a container is an excellent idea - deck boxes, larger pots - works great. I like to do that with arugula, cilantro and garden cress too. Might try it with cutting celery.

Fast little crops, nice to have right by the kitchen door.

I've done that radish & mesclun mix in the "over the deck rail" type of containers and was really pleased with the results. It did better planting the mesclun seeds about 2 weeks ahead of the radishes, then just using a pencil to randomly poke holes in the seedling area for radishes to go into. I'm Z-5, did this in early April a few years ago. (not a winter like this one!)

Also found that smaller herbs such as Italian parsley, oregano, & basil also like these boxes. They can be transplanted to the big herb garden in late summer. Or go into little pots for the kitchen. : )
