Bev I did the same thing, put Lantana in the garage to keep it warm, then left the garage door up once when it was very cold. I don't know why but I put my plants on the end close to the garage door instead of at the back of the garage next to the house where it would be warmer. I'm going to try again this year. Heat rises so I assume they would be warmer if I put them up on a shelf instead of down close to the floor so I'm going to try that too. Monkeybelle - Your basement sounds like an ideal place to keep plants in the winter. I use my garage because my basement is too warm. Sometimes my garage gets below freezing though. I wish it was a little warmer. There are a lot of "annuals" that you could try wintering over. I've had mixed luck keeping Butterfly bushes in pots over winter but about 3 of 5 have survived outside in pots on my patio on the south side of my house. They may have gotten too dry rather than too cold, not sure.

Ken, et al: Thursday (it was a Jewish holiday, could not use electricity so could not go online til tonight), I saw a swarm seemingly coming out of the ground at multiple sites of what looked like big ants, many with long white wings. Are those termites? They were walking around on the foam edging on top of the Adirondack fencing around the hosta garden---where the DEAD plum tree is. Were they going for the dead wood? Over the Jewish holiday, I had another idea. I used to teach with a gentleman who is on my co-op board and who lives across the street from me. Tried to call him tonight, but he was already asleep at 9:30 p.m. I will try to call him tomorrow to discuss the dead tree and having it removed, and then getting permission to get a new tree at the tree give-a-way. If I mention the winged things I saw marching around the garden Thursday (TERMITES), I figure that should raise the priority of removing the dead tree. Who wants termites around buildings? This guy knows me and knows I'm a science teacher. He also knows that I know my gardening, as evidenced by my beautiful gardens. So, that might give me the toehold I need to sway the co-op board to let me do what I want to do, which is only common sense anyway.

Repot it right this second! I've never left a potted palm in their original container for more than a couple of days. If it's rootbound, it definitely needs to go in a much larger pot no matter the time of year. I don't care about what anybody says about palms liking to be rootbound. I don't know of any plant that can possibly stay healthy in a pot with no soil! Watering once a day is unhealthy. That's something only nurseries do, or in climates that are hot with fast draining sandy soil. If it's in a 1 gallon pot, put it in at least a 3-5, if it's in a 3, put it in at least a 7, if it's in a 5, put it in a 15 ASAP.
