I don't know what it's been like in PA this winter but here in KY it's been very windy. I'll bet that we've had 20 or more days already this year with winds going 40+ not to mention that I live on the other side of a lake and the wind blows against my place all the time. What I did last year, which wasn't nearly this windy, was put 9 containers in one larger Tupperware that I had already this way all that extra weight helps hold everything down. I got this container at Meijers and it was fairly cheap so you might want to consider this option.

We've had lots of windy days so far and some reaching 60+. My milk jugs were fine sitting in the yard. Smaller bottles I had in a wading pool.

Were at 40-50 mile winds a few jugs went over but they are frozen solid, when it calms down will set then back up. I would just put them in a cold garage and wait till it calms down. NE Ohio

Just a few weeks ago, we had windgusts up to 60 mph. Man we thought that the windows were going to come crashing in and taped blankets over them just in case. Last year, I tied 4 milk jugs together by their handles, but didn't do that this year. That night, out of 30 jugs I had sitting out there unprotected, only one tipped over. Luckly it was a jug that I was just trying to get rid of the rest of the seeds in that packed, so I had already sown another jug of it, but it still might germinate!

My larger containers don't move. My smaller ones I put in crates all bunched together and they're fine.

Windy here too. Was supposed to be 40-50 mph, though I don't know how high they actually got. I have never had a gallon jug blow over, but half gallons and 2 liters and other smaller ones have. I always put the smaller ones in larger plastic bins to protect them and it works well.

For bins I use the top half of a dog cage and sterilite containers with holes drilled.

Very high winds here as well. I've been winter sowing many years and the only thing that knocks over my containers (all set on tables) is a certain pesky raccoon. If something falls, hopefully the soil is frozen or cold enough that it wasn't unsettled and you can just set them upright again. I've never tried to fasten mine down in any way.

I'm afraid to even look at my ws containers, I put them under the eaves up against the house early yesterday and just listening to the wind rip through my area last night was enough to make me cringe.

I left for work too early to check on them this morning, it was still dark out and I was more focused on trying to get the doors to my vehicle open, they were frozen shut. I eventually had to go in through the back of my SUV and crawl over the seats. I'll be checking on them this evening when I get home, I hope there still there.

Has anyone else had enough of this winter weather yet, show of hands please! Argh!

Well, I decided to put them out there. It is called Winter Sowing (and this is the first real good dose of winter weather in a while for us here in the Philly area), so why not?

I placed them on the deck, about 10 across on one row and six across on the other, and for each row, I tied some heavy duty string to one spindle on the deck, across to the spindle on the other side, while going through the handles of the jugs. Put a few bricks up against a few of the jugs for some extra weight. Came out there this morning, the soil was frozen solid and the jugs didn't move one bit.

I did it!!!

Now to find more containers.....

LOL Linda, I am!! Ready for this awful cold winter to be over.
We had high winds as well this past weekend. I half expected my ws containers to have blown into the next county. But the little bit of snow we had gotten before the winds started was enough to blow into and drift around my containers. So they are STUCK where they are for now :)

I still have 6 containers in the cold garage to get out there. But I'm too cold to think about going back out there now!

I hear ya green, thought the roof of the house might fly off with this last wind storm, but the gallon Ws'd containers stayed in place.
I put them facing South against the chainlink fenced area for veggies.
I think they are frozen in place now, with the ice storms and another one tonight!

I just put another eight containers out there last night. That make 24 in total for me. Everybody was right, this is very addictive!!!!!

Busylizzy, I have them on the deck and they are all frozen solid. And like you said, another storm is coming through tonight (actually right now as I write this it is snowing). We are supposed to only get an inch and then a change over, but temps will be cold, so it will freeze for a bit. I just hope the commute tomorrow is clear!

I can't wait to see how much mositure my babies can get!

Well here we go again here in NKY the winds are blowing at 40+ and are supposed to be like that all night. But hey what do you expect when it was 55 yesterday and it's supposed to be 34 tomm. When you have the temps change like that you're going to get some serious winds. I just finished my 1st 8 containers and decided to just leave them in the garage tonight. It seems like every year we have more and more of these major temp swings.
