Oh No Have I messed up..another newbie question

I am worried about where I have my jugs placed.I cant seem to get this through my thick thick skull.I have them on the east side of my house on my deck.I realized today,huh! they are still getting a lot of day sun.I dont have any sprouts yet,still have good moisture,the question is can I be frying my seeds.Do I need to move them closer to my house where it does get shadier earlier?Also it is freezing here now,but supposed to be in the 60's this weekend.Please tell me I havent fried my precious babies.I have over 150 jugs out there.Okay now dont be hard on me!!!!!!!velvet

My sprouts have lived through single digit temperatures and snow. They're in dappled shade. Upper 60s here next week too. going to be 19 tomorrow night.

Thanks Ann--ok, I can see the bilateral symmetry on the first bloom (btw, the dessicated very sick bloom, dessicated though it was, looked beige before it crumbled in my hand). I'll post a link to each new photo, which might be better for your land line? This sepal, on another bush is not symmetrical. I feel worried because the sepal at 6:00 is growing a leaf on its tip. Ahh, cracking. The next phase. Often fraught with frustration - but it doesn't have to be. I did forget one point on the husk removal - after you've gotten the bulk of the husk material off manually(and stained your fingers/hands), you really need to wash them to get as much of the remaining husk off as is possible. The big boys just pitch 'em in a cement mixer with some rough rocks or chunks of broken bricks - and I've got a friend who used an old clothes dryer - with the heating element removed - to roll 'em around for a while with water & rocks/bricks to get them almost squeaky clean. I don't have either, so I just put 'em in a 5-gallon bucket, fill it with water, and stir vigorously with a stick, pouring off the black water and adding more, until it comes off fairly clean. After the BWs have cured for a couple of weeks or more, then it's time for a session of cracking. A good heavy duty hard-shell nutcracker(not one designed for cracking pecans) is really helpful, but a bench-mounted vise is quite serviceable. Here's my main tip for BWs and hickory nuts - soak them in a pan/pot of warm water for an hour or two before you begin a session of cracking. The shells will absorb enough moisture that they will bend, buckle, and split, rather than explode into pieces when you reach 'critical pressure'. With a vise or nut cracker, a pair of diagonal wire-cutting pliers(for making a snip here and there in the nutshell to release nutmeats) and a nut pick, I can usually extract intact halves/quarters from the most inhospitable walnut or shellbark/shagbark hickory. A vote for the 'improved' nut varieties with thinner shells and open central cavities is in order. Emma Kay, Clermont, Thomas Myers, Neel #1, etc. are primo black walnuts, with thin shells and kernel % 2-4 times greater than the typical wild-type BW. Hickories - I'm still waiting for mine to bear, but I've had occasion to sample a few named varieties, and I have a local shagbark selection that won 1st place at the KY State Fair several years back. J.Yoder #1 and Grainger are probably two of the top shagbarks. Fred Blankenship's KY discovery, 'Simpson #1', may be the best shellbark to come down the pike.

OK everyone that emailed me so far will get seeds. There are no more after that...sheesh, I didn't think so many people would want some! Anyway, no SASE or postage necessary. My Addy will be on the return address and if you have something you would like to share with me that would be nice. I think sending postage, paying the postage to send it is kinda silly, so If ya got something to share or surprise me with GREAT. If not, that's ok too, I would rather know the seeds are going to good use for flower lovers than worring about 39 cents. Cliff, we already got our swap going! Please give me about a week or so because I thought I had more ripe pods than I actually have and I would prefer to do a mass mailing. I will give ya all a heads up when the seeds go out. This plant is actually one of Dennis' favs. he loves the bright blue flowers peeking though our kitchen window.

Denise, It's a lot easier if you have the right outlook on the kittens, they are livestock, they usually bring in money to the farm, so we can't afford to get attached. I used to have blue cats (as a matter of fact our first blue we got when we moved back to CA was Purrum's great-grandmother) which the kittens helped pay for the feed of the other animals. I tend to think of my cats as I do all my animals, they don't get names unless they are breeders, then they are lavished with attention. This doesn't keep the kids from naming them though. This is going to be our last litter, hopefully we can get Purrum spayed once she has weaned her kittens. Since we lost our blues, we don't sell our kittens anymore but offer them to anyone who wants them. The pet store will take them but offers nothing but the reassurance they won't go to the pound. I was looking at the kittens today, one looks like a previous kitten we had my kids named Troll so he is now known as "Troll jr." another looks like Purrum's mama who was poisoned when Purrum was 3 weeks old, Chantilly, so she will be Tilly. Two down, two to go, it looks like either three females and one male or two/two, one is questionable at this age. PS Your girls are adorable.

Your seeds aren't fried - they're fine. "Winter" sun is always weaker than "summer" sun, even in the tropics (relatively speaking). My containers are in full sun - have no place else to put them, since in fall/winter/spring my terrace is bathed in sunlight (when it shows its face). By the time they start sprouting and the air temps start warming up, you may want to move them to someplace less sunny.

Talk about the urge to kill..........

I was gone for two days and when I came home I found a big stray cat had decided to make a bed in my WS containers. It was a flat with eight pots in it and a plastic cover over it. It had plant markers but he had just wiggled them over and made himself a bed. I guess the sun had warmed the warm soil but the plastic kept him dry. I hate it when people drop off pets. Obviously he was accustomed to having a basket or bed of his own, so he didn't mind that it was on a shelf three feet off the ground. We live a few miles out of town and people get tired of their animals and just drop them off. This is the 2nd new cat in the last couple of weeks.

Sooner, stories like that turn my stomach! I'm an animal lover and I gotta tell ya... the better I know my critters, the less I want to know about HUMANS! The cruelest beast on earth is the human being.

That happens to my mom all the time too. It doesn't help that my adult brother and sister keep adding to the mess. It's not like they are supporting the animals they bring in or even themselves. Grrrr.
Sorry lots to vent there. On the other hand my cat who is loved was the second generation from a dropped off cat so I can't complain too much. He really is the ideal cat for toddlers. I don't expect any container trouble from him, it's the dog I am worried about.

Sorry, didn't intend to highjack the thread, but I was wondering where to put my containers as well. Not because of the sun, but because of the stray animals, and dogs that run loose.

If pvick says not to worry about the strength of winter sun, I'd trust that. If you are still worried sick, though, drape a white sheet, or a piece of shadecloth, over the containers in the morning on those 60-degree days. They'll stay much cooler.

Velvet and v1rtu0s1ty, if you don't have a shadier spot to move the containers to, all you have to do is vent the containers more, or take the tops completely off during the day, and make sure to water them if needed.
