Help With African Violet

This was my latest AV purchase. I bought this one about 2 weeks ago, repotted about 10 days ago, and has been in the same spot ever since. I work at the place where I purchased this plant and I noticed the same thing going on with several of the plants that are still at the store. I was wondering if it looks like powdery mildew on the leaf, but what concerns me is the curling of the leaves in the crown (pictures below). I really like the color of the blooms on this ones so if possible I'd really like to try to save the plant.

Empress -

the fungicide which always works is called "Topas" and it is not sold in US. The rest of the methods are less efficient, but much more user friendly. There is a Green Cure - it is potassium bicarbonate - I think you can purchase it online - you can spray every day until you will be done with it - potassium (K) is used by the plants - while baking soda - sodium bicarbonate - overloads plants with sodium - which can be too much. Neem oil is an excellent preventative - but if PM is in a full blast - it is not that efficient - the same is Lysol - yes - you interpreted it right. If you spray directly - it will leave cold spots on the leaves and the flowers will burn, fine mist is less damaging.

I would remove all affected leaves and blossoms - the fungus is already in a tissue - and spray with whatever home remedy you will find - soda or neem oil or Lysol.

The PM is a disease of fall and spring - warm days - cold nights - so if you can adjust your thermostat to reduce the difference and make sure that there is an air movement in a room = it will most possibly go down on its own.

I haven't seen Ron's starting mix, so I don't know what is in it. I use Jiffy peat pellets. Soak them until thoroughly expanded, squeeze as much water out as you can, cut off the mesh, and crumble it into a fine, fluffy peat. I put this in a lidded plastic deli container about 1 inch deep, and sow the seeds directly on top. Close the lid and you have a mini greenhouse. Put in bright light and wait. And wait. And wait. In 2-3 weeks you should start to see some tiny leaves. Keep the peat damp but not wet. Good luck. Barbara

Angela - i grew different gesneriads from seeds - and their seeds are so miniscule, you wouldn't see roots. The best approach is to have your seeds sprinkled on a surface of the soil in a transparent covered container in a warm spot with good light and get some patience. Timing can be from 1 week to 6 months until you see green growth. Since your seeds are fresh - should be in a month. Good Luck irina

This Violet was my husband's grandmothers who passed away. I have had it for years and it has been healthy and beautiful. Recently my mother brought me african violet food since she said she couldn't keep hers alive and therefore didn't need it. While putting a few drops on the pot the top popped off and the liquid got all over the plant. I washed it off but the violet started rotting away. I have taken it out trimmed the dead areas and changed soil, but it still is not coming back. Is there anything else I can do?

hi, geri...your plant is certainly unhappy!...i would repot now in very light soil (don't use miracle gro...too heavy)...i would use soil from ebay and look for hunter's wycked wicking soil...repot using that...probably i would put her into a self watering pot that would accommodate the roots...and probably smaller than it is in...the next thing i would do is take her out of her present pot and check her roots...if they are brown then take those off b/c they have rotted...don't be upset with taking those off, even if the plant doesn't have many left...i would remove all the yellow leaves and you will be left with a long neck...plant what's left after scratching the neck gently with your finger nail...water it and then put all of it in a plastic bag and wish her well...do not fill the self watering pot with water, as long as you water her thoroughly she may not need water for a month!....i would move her out of the south window, even with the balcony she may be getting too much light...i would move her to a north window until she shows some life...if she looks like she is just sitting there, she is probably busy growing roots...i would never put a violet in a window against the glass...it always surprises me how little light they actually need...you might want to read "you can grow african violets", something like that by joyce stork...also, join the facebook group of growing african violets for beginners...the last thing i would do at this time is to buy myself another african violet from the supermarket, or lowe's, home depot, etc...grow her in an east window all seasons...not against the glass...water from the top until the water runs out, but don't over water...if the soil feels wet on the top, don't water...if it is wet about 1 inch below the soil, don't water...and don't leave her sitting in water...keep us posted...hope this helps...this plant may not make it, but they are all a learning experience...good luck, sharon

I am sorry I can't be of too much help here. I am new to AVs and am just getting started in growing my own.
But the powdery gray stuff in that first picture does seem to be powdery mildew. However, as far as I can tell, the rest of the plant seems unaffected.
Perhaps the curling leaves suggests a nutrient deficiency? Or, perhaps it is just still so new (the leaves, I mean) and they haven't gotten quite yet had a chance to "stretch" out?
I really look forward to reading answers so as to fortify myself with my future AV collection.

The pot looks to be too big (you'd want no larger than a 4" diameter pot for that sized plant) ... and ... the pot needs to have drainage holes.

I would guess that your plant(s) are suffering from being in too large pots, and consequently, difficult water management.

Begin to think about changing pots soon ...

Looks like powdery mildew to me. Spray with Lysol directed up. The soil seems to be a store bought soil which needs to be cut with 1/3 perlite.
The recommendation about the size of the pot is correct.

The fact that the leaves are looking who knows where is probably attributed to all this moving and repotting. If it will be growing on a windowsill, it needs to be turned a bit every several days to avoid leaning towards light.

@Irina: When you say, "Spray with Lysol directed up" do you mean to say: 1. Use the Lysol disinfectant spray and 2. spray it up an away from the plant which means 3. let it mist down gently onto the leaves? And this works?!
If so will it work with other plants as well? I have some strawberries that have powdery mildew forming and I was going to try an "organic" mix of baking soda and liquid soap. But if your method works I will just do that!
But why not directly onto the plant?
Sorry so many questions. Am just so astounded and excited to find a method that may work!
