hardy annuals for wsing in zone 5

I'm new to ws and have alot of seeds from very generous donors. I have read in old posts about hardy annuals being ws. Are there any that I should be doing now in zone 5. Thank you for your help.

Hi ishareflowers! I've started putting out my hardy annuals. So far I've got blue lobelia, phlox drummondii, alyssum, snapdragons, johnny jump ups, pansies, and nicotiana out in the cold. I've also done marigolds, california poppies, nigella, malva 'Zebrina' and cosmos around this time in the past; I'm just waiting for more containers to put mine out ASAP.

phyl- yes, several of the winter-sowers did do hanging baskets via the winter-sowing method. Just as you say, but I believe they did not start the tender annuals until mid-late April. Hardies & half-hardies can be started earlier. Do join us on the winter-sowing forum! We'll be sowing everything under-the-sun from December through April- all outdoors! (That would be the difference between "Sowing in Winter" and "Winter Sowing." One is inside under grow-lights, and the other is tossing them outside in containers and letting Ma-Nature take over. To answer the OP directly, you can take a look at the FAQs on the Winter Sowing forum to get a list of Zone 5 annuals here, but pretty much we can do most any of them- just do the tenders later than the hardies. Of course, some will perform at your house better than they will at my house...I can't grow an impatien to save my life, but have excellent luck with Marigolds & Petunias (although neither have ever reseeded in my Zone 5 yard).

Yes, your expectations are reasonable and I think it's possible, especially if you're able to provide some winter protection. If all canes die back to the ground every year, you won't get much size-up, or it will take many years for the plants to establish. If you can bend some culms over, stake them to the ground, then cover them with a tarp or plastic for the Winter, that will keep those culms from dying -- providing you started with a cold-hardy variety to begin with. Michigan Bamboo Company might be a good place to look first. You could also take a look at the BambooWeb forum, as there are several regular posters there who are growing in z5 (not sure about z4 though).

I have grown Somniferum very successfully for many years, but all but one time they where direct seeded. They do best if they are scattered, very early in the spring, preferably on snow, or so I have been told and they did great that way for me. But... If you don't have 1000's of seeds, the chances they will land and grow where you want them too may be low. One thing I did though, which may work for you, is I put the seeds into ice cubes! I missed the snow that year, and thought up a compromise and it worked. I 1/2 filled an ice cube tray with water, put 3-5 seeds per cube in the water, let it freeze, added a bit more water, let it freeze (they tend to float, or at least mine did, this helped get them more into the ice). Then, I went outside, and put about 3 cubes in every spot that i wanted a poppy, and... it worked! There is also a topic started about pipe pots being good for transplanting poppies. perhaps try searching for "pipe pot". I think that the trick to moving poppies is getting them when they are small enough, and making sure you don't distrupt the tap root, which I really think this method could accomplish. I have transplanted very small poppies with great success. You just want to make sure you leave "tons" of dirt around them, use a full sized shovel even and pretend you are moving a 3 year old much larger plant! Perhaps you could do some "lasanga gardening" in spots where you want to plant the poppies. Prepare the soil early, lay down newspaper as a weed barrier, then good potting soil on top to plant the poppies in. Mark the spots so you know to leave them when you weed the rest of your beds. Or, you could sow them with the ice cube method, and put a marker in the ground to remind you of where they are and work with much more caution in those areas. perhaps don't even weed those areas until you know for sure that they are not your poppies!!

My folks live in zone 5/6. I planted snapdragons and Dusty Miller in their beds. Most of the Dustys came back year after year (got quite large, too), as did most of the snaps -- and in the case of the snaps, we're not talking reseeds (though there were plenty of those as well). On a related but perennial note, also have had Gladiolus bulbs over winter year after year for about two decades or more up there. This is without lifting or mulching. Some are planted up against their house, others are in a bed in the middle of their yard. Ironically, the winter hardy strain of glads I tried all died. These long term survivors are the "normal" run-of-the-mill glads sold by BBSs. Suspect much of this success is due to persistent snow cover through much of the winter there.

Wow...marigolds, california poppies now? Hmmm, maybe I should put mine out now.
I think part of the reason for the WSing "lull" I usually experience this time of year is that it's harder to find a place to put the containers. I have to look for somewhere that won't be in the way of the plow, the snowblower while also being accessible. But I might just do a bunch and chug it out there...

(...I thought Malva "Zebrina" was a perennial??)

Hi Linda,

My malva 'Zebrina' never makes it through the winter, but it reseeds freely. So, I consider it an annual, even though I know it can be perennial in warmer zones. If you have a good microclimate for it, you might get it to hang around. Mine are fairly exposed to the elements.

Mine are against the house, so maybe that's why I thought it perennial...although it could be a volunteer I've been looking at too (those darn things reseed in the lawn!!)

Michelle, that list is definitely helpful! The only ones I'm waiting on are things that I know germinate very quickly, and are not frost tolerant. Otherwise, I'll spend too much time and energy, covering and uncovering, or moving them in and out of the garage to keep from losing the early sprouts.

Also, a couple of things germinated better when I direct sowed them last year, Cosmos and Marigolds. So I'm either waiting much later to sow them, or just direct sowing after the last frost.

So far I've sown most of my perennials, but the only annuals I've done are Alyssum and Dianthus. As soon as I can get some more containers prepped, I will sow some Dimorphotheca (African daisy), Calendula, Portulaca, Amaranth, and Millet. Then it's on to Gazanias, Petunias, Zinnias... and so on.

Sigh, so many seeds, so little time : )

Thank you for the info zone 5ers! I didnt know I could do all of those now. I"m new and really dont know the diff. between hardy annuals and tender annuals. I scan these threads in the morn.and again at night trying to get the info I need.I guess I better get plantin!
