Folded leaves

Happy almost Friday,

I have a question about the AV I just bought a couple of days ago from HD. It's growing nicely and kept it's blossomss (new ones are even opening) after repotting. The one thing that has me baffled is that most of the leaves are kind of folded upward, some even have crinkles along the sides. The leaves are not limp, but very crisp. Is this because the plant was so dehydrated when I bought it? The new ones in the middle show the same trait, and I haven't seen that kind of leaf on any of the foliage description webpages.

Are they wavy around the edges like it might be how the plant is supposed to grow? Or, does it look really strange...like it has something wrong with it? There is soem type of bug that starts with a "c" that will cause the leaves to fold upward. Keep in mind that there are a number of leaf varieties. I have African Violet's that have leaves that grow a bit upward, but not wavy and curly. You should post a picture of it, it'd help us tell you what is wrong with it.

Sounds like the plant is not getting enough water. Bananas are greedy in terms of the watering and fertilizing needs. How often are you watering it? and How large is the container compared to the plant? Should be watering it every day at the temperatures you are providing. Also, very important, some soils (especially those high in peat moss), do not readily retain water. You may think you are watering, but the soil just beneath the surface may be bone dry. When you water, be sure to saturate the soil thoroughly. Also, consider transplanting to a larger container--bananas need their space--even the dwarfs.

If you decide to repot, do not use peat moss. I am of the opinion that they need the same requirements no mater where you live. Home: Right size of container, Warmth in Winter, little water, and if you do make sure it is warm water, do not over water or the leaves will split, down the middle, get scallop leaves, they grew to fast, etc. The tips may dry up as well, some San just have white tips. FOOD: They will need steady supply fertililzer after you water in the summer. AIR: just like we do WATER: steady every week in the summer LOCATION: Some will need more sun than other , some more humidity, some partial shade others full shade. Those with thin leave need more shade, those that are thick more sun, variegated more light. PEST: Patrol, they should not have any. End if Conversation. LOVE: They will need your attention and love, Change their soil every two years, this gives you a chance to look at their roots, and see if they need more soil, the plant will eat everything that is in your mix except the pumice or rocks. Check and see the condition of thier pots, did they break it, or has it begun to turn oval intead of round if so they may just may split it after the next watering. Maggie, this is a new behavior. I have had to relocate plants since the move, and they are getting more sun. But, they don't open and close, just seem to stay more closed than I had noticed in the past. Since BirdsNestSoup is so close to you, in relative geography, I would follow that suggestion. Currently, mine does not seem to be reacting badly to all that extra water, so Who Knows? I have had a bad day today, repotting. I have found a large number of Sans, bought from reputable dealers, WAY over potted, and barely breaking root dormancy. I had hoped to share a significant amount of these in a spring trade, but most are barely breaking dormancy, and the roots are appaling. I would cringe to receive something looking like this, so can hardly send something like this out. Argh! We have had a long, cloudy spell of days, over three weeks now. I suppose that 'could' have contributed, but, I doubt it.

Folding leaves, brown, yellow - spots on stems

on my lower branches they are turning yellow with blackish brown spots on leaves and at the last 4 or 5 inches of stem also leaves are curling inward .thanks for any replies.

Maybe "curling upward" wasn't a good description. Here are a couple of pictures so you can see what I mean.

Hi,

Your violet may be "reaching" for light. Your place of purchase doesn't have the best growing conditions and lighting for violets, plus it probably was crowded in with other plants as well. Violets like some space around them, not touching other leaves. Let it get gradually accustomed to whatever light source you are using. If under lights, keep to outer edge of shelf until used to new light situation. If in natural light, the same applies, and keep back from window for awhile.

The pests africanvioletlvr refers to are mites. The cyclamen mites cause edges of leaves to curl upward, while broadmites cause the edges to turn under. There are usually other symptoms as well. Nancy R. has some excellent posts on this forum about mites if you do a search. She is an expert in this area and gives great information about symptoms and treatments.

Your violet looks happy and is blooming so that is a great plus. You should keep it away from your other violets until sure no unwanted "friends" hitched a ride home with it.

Just my opinion: your plant is fine. Some violet varieties have really wavy leaves, and some just have slightly wavy leaves. I have several plants that have leaves similiar to yours. You rplant is green and blooming and looks to be in good condition. If you start having problems with the center leaves dying out, that is the indication of mites. Happy growing! :)
