Anyone have a marbeled goby?

I got a couple a few weeks ago after deciding I could deal with the adult size and food billing. I can't find much info on them though. Anyone found a good source of info or is there none? I've been looking the whole time I've had them on and off and haven't found anything that isn't very general...Specifically I'd like more info on how to wean them onto shrimp pellets because I've been told it can be done.

I did learn the hard way the don't like sudden change and will hop the tank at first if you don't net it.

The Marbled Sleeper Goby, Oxyeleotris marmoratus, is one of the larger Gobies, growing up to 20". It is a nocturnal hunter, and inhabits slow-moving bodies of fresh water. During the day, it hides among bogwood and rocks, where its camouflage marbled coloring comes in handy. Provide this fish with plants, wood, rocks, and a soft substrate where it will dig when hunting for food. Because of this, a good filtration system is needed.

The Marbled Sleeper Goby is a greedy fish and can consume its own weight in food every day. It will eat virtually anything from meaty foods to insect larvae to live foods."

Sleeper Gobies are also called Gudgeons, and are not true gobies. They're an interesting group of fish, including some very beautiful small species. Peacock Gudgeon and Purple-Spot Gudgeon are both breed commercially, and can be found with a little searching. I used to breed Peacocks.

Knowing it's size and how much it eats, I think you'd go broke trying to feed it shrimp pellets. I would start culturing red worms (which is very easy to do) and plan on feeding it chopped fresh fish, shellfish, etc. Whatever is fresh and on sale in the seafood dept. Canned salmon packed in water will work as well. Frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and squid are all excellent too. If your LFS carries blackworms, they are a good food as well, but must be kept in the fridge and rinsed daily.

DO NOT OVER FEED!!! This is very important with any carnivore that eats a lot. Also, do not feed beef heart (occasionally is ok, once/month or less) or other red meats. Feeder fish are not very nutritious, and can carry parasites.

Give this fish room to grow, no less than a 48" tank, it gets 20" long. (personally I would probably move it to a 96" or bigger once it grows to 10-12") Weekly water changes are important as well, 25% or more. Very fine gravel or sand will allow it to dig food out of the substrate.

I've included a link to buy some red-worms, but if you head to the vermiposting forum I'm sure they can give you lots of sources for them. Red-worms are one of the best fish foods IMO, as they can be fed to almost any fish since you can find baby worms and adult worms easily. I culture them in a standard fish shipping styro box from my LFS. You could probably get one from a Vet as well. Rubbermaid and similar boxes can also work.

Is it any better if I raise my own feeders? I have goldfish and rosy reds outside and guppies (3 adults and four fry) and platies (one very pregnant) in my other tank. I was hoping they'd help control population overflow but if it's really not good for them...

It's one of the reasons I wanted a predator I end up with too many goldies at the end of the year and the petshop won't take them for free...One year I had 80 babies and 10 that still made it through winter outside.

I got some blackworms for the time being (they hardly touch them) so of course they finally started eating the zebra danios I bought with them. My petshop doesn't sell guppies anymore they sell young zebra fish instead which was a great deal when they had zebras, guppies, and whiteclouds (only zebras now) in the tank for ten cents and I was looking for little fish for my other tank but I have my doubts about them being easy feeders to catch. I had 15 in there and then 7 dissapeared in one night so maybe my little big men just aren't that hungry..

Old list but will add. Interesting to see what others have. Sherry 1 20 regular, redwood driftwood with Annubias suctioned on walls bottom.... asian glass catfish, with one huge female guppy which schools with them (she taught them to go to top and they follow her to bottom as well) Assorted cories about 6. 1 20 long. Two pieces of redwood driftwood. Annubias Barteria (sp) on small wood placed around large (large left bare to show off forms)... One red dwarf gourami, one blue female betta. (can you say understocked) 1 20 long, with rock slab, two pieces together look like cut into at one end... black gravel, greyish rock with white streak, little red. Swords behind it... Not sure what to put into it, maybe move the blind cave fish, as they can take higher lime if rock is not what I think it is. Huge round globe (found at plastic place going out of business) think they must be for light fixture. About 2 plus feet wide at widest. One in living room sitting on chinese thing that usually holds bowl. Plants in middle (light from above - focus light)... so far one blue neon dwarf gourami (seperate from original 20 long as they started to fight and one died from stress)... a couple 2nd generation non descript guppies (supposed to be blue, sigh) and 3 blind cave fish, which look great swimming round and round. May put dianos in there (never ending swim lane so will seem bigger) and move and add more to 20 long the blind cave fish... Smaller globe, about 5 gallons. On desk under lamp.. One lone blue betta, seperated due to fighing in 20 long. Annubias bar plant and some floating hedge... under filter heater.... I looked all over for these globes as I got them originally for terrarium plants (two are used as such) I find them really beautiful for fish tanks... I pot the swords in tubs (easier to clean) and due to contortion of light, only see plants, but can see fish higher up. Light shining down (those canister type with halogen, not supposed to work but I use them just fine) (ie lower light plants) I can't find more, unfortunately.... Before I had put wood in one, had arranged it on tube so it was half in half out (water is only filled half way, not sure if it would break if filled, and half way is a lot of water)....really looked nice as well. When one WalMart is bad, do not blame all of the stores. Period! I work at a WalMart store in Oklahoma and its currently the largest Supercenter store in the state. Yes, thats right, I work in the Pets department overnight. This is a really tough decision on my work hours. I like working at nights, because it pays more, but I want to work during the day, because I want to be around more customers to teach them more about fishes. I stock the Pets department, but I do assist customers with fishes. Its a real challenge, because of right now, I am basically deaf without the use of my hearing aid and all my life, I've been wearing my hearing aid and was able to hear great as other people can, but there is a problem right now in my ear, so its tough. I can speak to people very clearly and I try to read their lips and when neccessary, I have them to write down on paper. All stores that sells fish are bound to have a dead fish here and there... thats perfectly normal. One night, this customer was an idiot, actually very rude somewhat. He wanted the entire tank of a specific fish that cost 5, 10, or 15 cents each (cant remember at the moment), so I went ahead to net out all of the fishes, but let one fish in the tank, because it had some kind of fungus. I told him that the one fish is bad. I went ahead to prepare the fishes into the bag and while I was doing that, he went ahead and netted the sick fish out and I tried to tell him, but he wouldnt listen and he put the sick fish in the bag. I went ahead to tie up the bag and note the price and amount of fishes, but I did not add the sick fish to the total price. While I was doing that, he went ahead to net up 4 dollars worth of goldfishes that costs 15 cents each and I told him that I will do that. He wouldnt listen and by the time he was finished, I prepared the fishes into the bag and then he went and got some more and put it in the bag. I tried to count the fishes in total and estimated it to be 50 fishes, which came to about $7.50. He wouldnt listen to me and he wanted things his way. There was this one night, I spent nearly an hour educating a lady on fishes and tank care. She ended up on picking two fancy goldfish and the alage eater that sticks to the tank glass. After everything was done, about an hour or so later, when I walked by the fish tanks, I noticed two bags in the sink. I was shocked, she changed her mind at the checkout. Made me furious. Its alot of stress a fishes to net them out and bag them. Another night, this guy wanted several fishes, which was divided up into two bags. After all was done, he came back about 15 minutes later, saying the prices on the bags came off, so I wrote it on the bags again. Later that night, my coworker brought the two bags back and dumped the fishes back into the tank. What is wrong with these customers?! Anywayz, I still work there and I still enjoy educating people on fishes and tank care. Just because there is a lazy associate at a store, the entire company should not be blamed. Its very simple to talk with the store manager about whatever. PetsMart is a good place and they have much more selections. WalMart is good, but not enough selections. Petsmart is generally more expensive but there are some fishes here and there thats cheaper than WalMart. There are PetCo stores in this state, but I have no clue where they are. I've seen commericals, but they failed to show the locations of the stores. So, I have no clue about PetCo. Anywayz, all of these stores sell good and healthy fishes with top technology fish tanks. It all comes down to the services of each associates for each stores.

Anyone growing bamboo in the SW?

Check out the all the bamboo at the Albuquerque Botanic Gardens. No idea which species, but running and clumping well represented in multiple large stands there. The largest is back by the Heritage Farm area, covering many thousands of square feet in area. This stand at least appears to be on it's own, having a naturalized look and being well outside the groomed area of the Gardens. None of these bamboos are like the monsters you see in their native habitat, (Even in more favorable East Coast climates I've never seen anything over 2 inches diameter) but definitely proof that very nice bamboo stands are possible in NM at least.

Wow, Cathy. That sounds like quite a tomato year. I thought I was doing great with over 25 on my Pineapaple plant. Your Big Rainbows look gorgeous. Thanks for the tip about drying them - I will definitely try that. I count 8 right now on my Big Rainbow. One is large, 4 are medium and 3 are small. Strangely enough, although growth started out slow with this plant, it's now my tallest. Here's what it looks like today. I guess the tomato got heavier, because now I see the top instead of the bottom. It seems like the Pineapples are smaller than the largest Big Rainbow. But they are plentiful. A bug obviously liked them too. (Anyone know what kind of bug that would be?)

i have a marbled sleeper goby living with a dinosaur bichir. they were b oth 3 in. long when i got them and they are fairly good tank mates, the bichir swims around and lays against the goby and i have no incidents between the two. the bichir however has body armor for scales and that may work out in his favor. my bichir is no about the size of a regular sharpie and the goby is 9 in. and about 2 1/2 inches across, even though there is an enormous size difference the goby doesn't attack the bichir.
