Yeah, what Nancy said. With trailers, size (such as standard or semi-mini) refers to the size of the leaves; the plants themselves, because they have multiple crowns, can grow as large or as small as you wish, depending on how many crowns it has; I have a standard, Sweet Cheri Trailer, that I just put into a 6" hanging pot; you can put them in shallow plastic saucers, the kind you put under pots, and grow them as a sort of ground cover (sounds like what you're doing) or in hanging pots and let them drape and just get bigger and bigger... LOL Not quite :) The grass is brushed to the north. :P Interestingly enough, I am *always on the lookout for a way to do something better, easier, etc but if it doesn't pan out, I know what to go back to. I was afraid I would hurt myself (or my procelain stove top) with that drill and the dust made me cough. I am kind of anal about many things and being super organized provides a tremendous sense of mental comfort to me. I used to see it as a character fault but learned to see it as a gift :) And don't worry, I took it in the spirit intended :) I remember when I first came here 2+ years ago, I was so convinced that the way that I had been taught was THE way to do it...and I began to learn from all of you....and I learned that the person who taught me not only didn't know everything....but that they didn't know much at all and I began to grow and experience a greater quality to my plants, blooms and overall violet experience. As great as that was, it couldn't touch the people that I've met :) When we know better, we do better. We're either green and growing or ripe and rotten. I know what I want to be :) Dora

I'm back and have read the evolving conversation among all those who responded. I'm starting to get a feel for things now and am also in danger of becoming a fanatic on AV's. :-) From all I'm learning here and reading elsewhere, this is an unusual hobby having as much to do with intuition as with science. What fun! I now have six plants and the trouble is that all but two have no names (cheap supermarket stuff but irresistible and in surprisingly good shape). I've just discovered that all sorts of souvenir ceramics gathering dust around my place have great potential as AV containers since they don't need holes in the bottom -- not to mention that they're more decorative than what's available in local stores. So I'm off and running. I'll post photos of anything that survives my tender attentions! Thank you all for your help. I'm going to follow the threads on this Forum carefully from now on. Krys

Thank you, Irina! I am happy to have found this board, as it seems I have found AV experts here! I have enjoyed reading other posts for info and all your good advice to others too. My husband and I just bought our very first home last August, so this has opened up the world of plants and gardening! I have always felt I couldn't work with plants, that I would kill them all, but so far I have even got begonias going strong. I realized I just need to pay attention and follow directions! :) In the past, I think I killed plants because I wasn't attentive to their individual needs. Really excited about getting this violet going. I bought soil and perlite at home depot today, but both have miracle grow. I was worried about how to deal with that as far as knowing when to start giving AV food. I considered going to the nursery tomorrow to find mix and perlite w/o additives. If I do use the miracle grow, your advice to wait a few months is perfect. I will update with pictures! :) --la
