When to cutback -- fall/winter vs. spring?

Hi, this has always been one of my favorite forums. Have't been around for awhile and moved about 2 years ago, finally seeing results in new gardens (had many at old "homestead"). My question is (having a "senior moment") when do you cut back many perennials for the next year--fall, winter, or spring? I cut back my butterfly bush last fall and it is gorgeous and so full this year, I'm afraid to do anything different, but know not all plants are cut back until the next spring? Any help would be greatly appreciated. (I have many day lillies, echinecia (sp?), liatris, geraniums such as Johnson's Blue and a pink trailing one, quite a few clematis, cleome (they reseed themselves, correct?), hollyhocks, lots of hosta which I cut back late fall and returned much fuller, etc.), bell flowers, poker flowers, etc.
