Something ate my Shagbark Hickory from underground

Hi folks,

I'm a little distraught. I've been nursing this 2yr old Shagbark Hickory seedling only to see that it was recently lopped from underground. There are no holes in the ground around the tree, but I have seen holes in the veggie garden nearby. It was maybe 8" to 1' tall and I was really ready for it to put on some good growth next year.

Anyway, now that it is gone...is there any chance it will come back from root sprouts? I know hickory tend to grow well from those, but I don't know if such a young tree will do that. I know the culprit came from underground b/c I put chicken wire all around the tree.

So my 2 questions...

1) will it come back via root sprouts?

2) what did it?

I'll post pictures later. thanks...
