Now I'll have an excuse to travel back to Bentonsport, IA and thoroughly enjoy this garden's expansion. Of course, it will be a much long drive for Sue and I, since we live in Manistee, MI - about an hour's plus drive south of Traverse City. I am really sorry that you live so far away, but I'll give you another excuse to travel - whenever you plant to visit this garden - plan it as a stopping point to visit the Missouri Botanical Gardens in St. Louis. In order to fully enjoy this garden in St. Louis, you might wish to plan for a 1.5 day tour - there is so much to see and enjoy. By the way, if you and yours are into staying at a Bed & Breakfast place, you might give Maggie Leyda a jingle; she's owns and operates Maggie's B & B in Collinsville, IL - located within a 15 minute plus drive to the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis. Maggie is a retired academic Librarian, who has traveled in the orient via freighters and such and who will also offer you a nice room with reasonable rates, many stories of her travels, and a good healthy breakfast to boot. The "something else" piece is a confection spoon, being slightly larger than a bon bon spoon, which is a little bit bigger than a nut spoon. I'm clueless as to what constitutes a 'confection' but I'd be interested in hearing what everyone else thinks. Different mfgrs named things differently & when it suited their purpose, they renamed the same piece. It was all about marketing & how to get the lady of the house to buy more silver. I know a decent amount about Victorian & turn of the century silver, but almost nothing about styles & names after 1910. I don't doubt that these small ladles are now called sauce ladles - I suspect they were used for that purpose in 1900, too but maybe 'cream' sounded more decedant. I'm guessing here, but I think cream ladles were meant to be used with cream that was barely whipped. Regular whip cream is too stiff to work well with a ladle (been there, done that) & a ladle wouldn't be needed if you poured heavy cream from a jug. I have a small, double spouted sauce boat that I use, but I don't know if there was a special piece for the purpose; the ladle is in scale to the boat so it fits my criteria. On second thought, the original cream ladles (known as the 'old style') had much smaller bowls & thinner handles & were in use before 1900 so maybe they were used for dipping about a tablespoon of heavy cream from a jug instead of pouring. FWIW, Besides serving cream with those large portions of berries, the Victorians also offered a bowl of sugar (powdered, I think) to be served with a sugar sifter (basically, a pierced version of a cream ladle or a pierced confection spoon). Then those delightful berries were eaten with small berry forks. I wish I had some now! Hester

I built a compost bin nearby with builder's block from my FIL's old milk house built in 1929. We have a bunch more to collect from eastern Idaho. Lined it with a some newspaper, then a wet phone book someone threw into our trash can next to our shop doors and also a bag full of apples! Must have been my eldest son or my hubby. I couldn't believe my find. My 12 year old saves the phone books for his BSA camp outs. Good to start a fire with LOL So I guess he missed out on this one. WE get extra phone books from our neighbors who passes them out in the fall. One thing my son did was have the nerve to take one of the blocks from my compost bin to place under his snowmobile trailer's tongue when he got back. I did go out later at night to get the dog food bag and some more newspaper. Then in the morning, I could have gotten more newspaper, but didn't dare. I think the recycle people would be disappointed. Now I'm just going to ask her if I can collect her used paper. The dog food bag was a bust. I told her what I was up to and told her I was raking up the leaves in the ditch, clearing up the grass, etc. She said I could have all the leaves I want and I asked about the newspaper and she said she'll just leave the bin by my compost bin. (I loved how they talked amongst themselves in spanish to decide about taking them to where I live which is behind the new subdivision) They actually loaded all the cut grasses and raked up leaves and put them in their truck and took them to my house and unloaded them for me. I wasn't expecting such service. They said they would just dump them anyway. So, I scored big time in the goal of getting other people's mulch and having it delivered. Where is that thread anyway?! I told them they can dump more of their grasses. They weren't done with this big subdivision and they also mow the shared grassy area and little parks. So I told them feel free to dump the grass too! When the grass gets long enough to mow. Plus I got the main guy's card to have him do some pruning and other stuff for me. I think the crew was amazed that this blonde haired lady, driving a ford clubwagon was willing to load it up with all the tall grasses! Let alone talk to them, as some people in this manicured area probably wouldn't bother speaking to them. So she & I scooped peanut shells into my sandwich baggie as Gary made faces & shuddered. * Posted by: antic_zone9 z9FL (My Page) on Mon, Mar 15, 04 at 20:13 You know you're a compost wacko (or a wannabe) when: ...you take morning walks on trashday, pretending to be exercising, when you're really scouting the free bags of leaves. ...you walk the same route again, this time with the dog, in order not to arouse suspicion because you want to snag a beautiful closet door that will make a perfect wormbin (because of it's louvers). :) ...you don't worry about working out in a gym because you get your upper body workout by forking and turning your garbagecan compost bin. :) ...your DW is actually proud of you because of your commitment to something worthwhile (although you know she wonders about your sanity sometimes!) ;) ...you're ticked off that you can't compost plastic, because it won't break down within your lifetime, but you are happy that you are composting 60% of your garbage! ...you read composting books in the restroom and wonder if the DW would EVER let you have a composting toilet in the next house. (even if it was YOU that maintained it!) ...you subconsciously thank all of those hard-working neighbors who painstakingly rake up all of their leaves so you can steal their bags the next morning! ;) ...(this has been said before, but what the heck!)
