Briggs & Stratton I/C 11 HP: stator-alternator

Subject alternator not putting out voltage. The output wires are connected properly. Is there hope for it, a fix, a check, before getting a new one?

Well it appears there are a variety of stators available for that engine and you don't describe it.

A lead coming from the stator will have a "fat" place in it. This is the diode for changing AC to DC. Use a test meter of a a test light to see if this has continuity in only one direction. IF none or in both directions, the diode is bad. A replacement can be picked up at Radio Shack I should have asked if the stator winding appeared burnt.

Anyway, stators from many B&S engines will interchange with that and should be readily available. Are the magnets in your flywheel OK?

As Walt mentioned, there are multiple stators (4) that could be on your engine.

You may want to describe the COLOR of the wire(S) and COLOR of the connector.

IF you have 2 Yellow wires coming from the alternator that go into a Voltage Regulator (with a RED wire output) that can be checked with the ACV range on a voltmeter.
Look for 28 VAC MINIMUM. (some require 40 VAC min and some 20)
If you have the "other" type, describe wires & colors etc.

I recommend using a NGK BKR5EIX pt. # 6341 spark plug . IT will last 8 - 10 years depending on the hours per week it is used, commercially a good 5-6 years . The other problem is the fuel filter. An in line filter like a NAPA 3012 will filter out the the trash that the factory screen filter allows to get to the carburator. The carburator is another problem as water gets is the gas much quicker . Take bowl loose with a long pair of needle nose pliers & clean if bowl leaks gas may need to get the 2 gaskets to bowl. Make sure you have your model # . Fuel is another issue as there is more alcohol in gas these days . Premium gas may help if you don't use daily BUT the product that I have found that works best to disperse water in gas is REDLINE SL-1 fuel additive. 1 ounce per gallon will make the alcohol & water disapear. Exception to this would be when you see water on the bottom of the tank . In this case drain the tank first before cleaning the bowl of Carburator . Just a reminder to never leave the switch on when the motor is not running . Most 14.5 B & S have an electric switch that allows fuel to go through carburator when switch is on. If that does not fix your problems you have a spark issue , a valve clearence adujst hot or cold ? or broken connecting rod . Mechanical issues should be taken to a specialist !

hi all i have a qestion that i hope can be answered. i have poulan riding mower that had an 17 hp i/c single cylinder on it that blew up, my dad had a 18 hp opposing twin cylinder lying around have already bolted the motor on and hooked everything up except the wiring, not sure how to wire it up the 18 has a yellow wire from the coil and the red and white wire from the stator, the mower its self has the same plug for the white and red wire, but is orange and red, also the other motor had the high speed cut off that went to the carbuerator, it is white and black. when i plugged the red and white wire to the red and orange wire together and ran the mower, my key switch would not cut it off. just wonder if any one on here has done this. any info on this would be greatful thanks.

Check the diameter and length of the crankshaft extension. If they are the same it should be a simple swap.

"using catch can, test for fuel flow to carb inlet by cranking engine. Be careful of fire." I would point out this will do no good as the engine has a fuel pump built into the carb. As mentioned way back up on this very old thread, check the vacuum impulse line from the engine block to the fuel pump. This will be the bottom line, gas line is on the side IF you took the fuel pump apart, did you find and properly replace the 2 tiny springs? In the process of acting on the advice, checks and tips given in your replies, I disconnected the plug going into the stator's outlet and using a voltmeter on the tips revealed, got 19-20 DC volts. Good stator!
I found that the positive wire from the stator and into the switch and out to go around the amp meter and back to the solenoid was defective. Rewired it, took the amp meter apart, and all is copacetic now.

In the area of probably too much information: This Craftsman rear-discharge 6-speed mower was purchased in 1985 for just under $2,500. Still runs great, use it all the time for finer mowing and would take the rear-discharge over any side discharge including my 3-blade, 61" deck diesel mower.

Interesting that you got a motor made in 1989 on a mower sold in 1985????

I got those numbers from my original owner's manual - not from the machine. Also have the 1985 receipt from Sears. Don't know what else to say?
