Let there be light and now I don't want it

In the past, I always complained to myself about how much shade my yard had. Not total shade, but a bit more sun would have been nice for those sunlovers. Well, I got my wish. On Easter Sunday, the house to the south of me burned to the ground. This was a large two story duplex that shaded the entire south side of my house. A couple of weeks ago, the huge Blvd. Elm on the north side of my house came down because of Dutch Elm disease.

Suddenly areas of my yard where I had established shade lovers are getting lots of sunlight. Combined with the drought and yucky heat we're having this year, things are frying quickly. I have to rethink some major areas of my garden and now wish things were back to the way they were. All this sun ain't what it's cracked up to be.

I should mention that it's very unlikely a new house will be built anytime soon where the one burned down. The way things go around here probably 4-5 years.

Anyone been through something similar?

Kevin
