Snow removal dilema..opinions wanted.
Comments (12)I'd keep the neighbors plowing and buy a good walk behind. Transferring mower to snow blower and vice-versa twice a year is a pain. You mentioned that you're retired, in changing attachments you're going to be down on the ground or garage floor a lot, consider that. Buying a second machine so as to have one with blower and one with mower seems pricey but would work. My experience with snow blowers (Oswego, NY for 10 years) was they work great, HOWEVER you have to have a heated space to periodically melt the slush, etc. or you'll end up burning belts and popping shear pins due to everything freezing together. You'll read various posts on this topic, a lot of folks simply put a 60 watt trouble light down the chute, leave it on and hope for the best. Also, with any of the Garden tractor or walk behind units, if you get a very deep snow, well you can eventually clear it, but it's a royal pain and you'll probably call in the neighbors with BIG equipment. I have a 1000 foot gravel driveway and it's cleared with a 26HP GT500 with blade, weights, chains and Ag tires. I might have to plow twice which means going out after there's 6" or so of snow then doing it again later. I own a farm so have large farm tractors one of which has a blade to use when we get a lot of snow. Since moving to Southern Ohio have only had to do that once in 9 years. I'm in no way suggesting a blade for your application, you need a blower. Good Luck, Ev...See MoreNeed some walk behind snow blower advice please.
Comments (10)I would look seriously at the larger single-stage machines - they are lighter and easier to handle than the 2-stage blowers. They will handle up to a six-inch snow pretty easily. The Toro 421Q has been getting some pretty good reviews. Depending on if you want to spend the $$, a Honda can't be beat. Ariens makes good 2-stage machines, but their single-stage machines seem to take a backseat to Toro. When selecting a snowblower, stick to HATS: Honda Ariens Toro Simplicity/Snapper You do NOT want to walk on the snow prior to blowing it, if at all possible. Just the pressure of your footsteps can compact the snow enough to turn it to ice, which is difficult for any snowblower to pick up. Tough snowpack or ice can be nearly impossible to clear with your average snowblower, although the tracked machines can have a real advantage here if you know how to adjust their cutting depths. Tracked machines are more difficult to handle and cost more $$. If you get many snows over six inches, then you might consider a small 2-stage, like an Ariens 624. If the smaller snows are much more prevalent, go with a 5-7hp single-stage. Leave the big 9-13hp snowblowers to the folks who regularly blow out twelve inches or more. If you make a mistake and buy a cheap snowblower like I did (Craftsman aka MTD), you can recoup some performance by installing an impeller kit (search the 'net for Clarence Impeller Kit). Comments (33)Mookylama, When the truck arrives and you get off loaded, have a razor knife on hand (box cutter does not reach through the heavy cardboard), a claw hammer and catspaw to pull the top braces off and a couple of planks or plywood, the trucking company that delivered mine used a second pallet to move it on the pallet jack, between that and the overinflated tires I had to hoist it up and place planks under to roll it off the factory pallet. Probably will not get moving till next week sometime, mine made it from SC to CA in 48 hours! Well then it sat over memorial day in a freight depot till the local trucker delivered it tuesday. Checked the oil level, battery was already connected, added fuel and left it sit a few min with the key in run position (not sure if it has a fuel valve), put the throttle to choke and it fired right up after 3-4 short cranks. Make sure to follow the manual to purge the transmission, other than that it's good to go. I added the Sears front scoop to mine to move dirt and rocks around, it's a direct bolt on, both Husqvarna and Sears sell the same scoop made by Agri-Fab so I suspect whatever fits a Husqvarna YT2042 will fit the Ariens, I called a Husqvarna dealer the other day about wheel weights and he confirmed the bolt holes in the Husqvarna were 4-5/8" centers so I may order a pair. Ariens seems to not list any accesories and LOL the nearest Ariens dealer to me is in Lake Tahoe several hundred miles away and I am sure he sells more snowblowers than tractors....See MoreSnapper RER repower w/ Honda?
Comments (22)I'm also going to avoid the Honda v. Briggs debate by stating this: the only reason I went with the Honda is because of the ebay deal I found. I am willing to put any major brand on this mower so long at it works reliably. Briggs, Tecumseh, Kawasaki, Honda, Kohler, whatever...I just want it to mow. Dale, here's a feeble attempt at showing you the kill switch mod I mentioned previously. I tried to shoot pics of my setup but even with the fuel tank pulled, it was impossible to show you. In the following picture you'll see the location of the kill switch on your specific engine. You must push it in towards the carb to kill the engine. This is actually designed to be pushed in and killed when you throttle down all the way. Our (at least MY) mower does not have the stroke distance on the cable to kill it. So, just drill a hole where the throttle is supposed to hit the kill button, stick a small bolt in the hole and place a nut on each side of the throttle lever. This will allow you to adjust how far you have to throttle down to kill the engine. I'm pretty sure it's just as easy to splice in a different or additional kill switch on the "dash" Here is a link that might be useful:...See Moreequinox_grow
