Question about chocolate joe pye weed

Hi,

This plant is new to me 1 day to be exact : ) Yes, I'm still buying in this drought! I should have researched this one first. I thought joe pye weed liked moisture but I read the Chocolate one needs well drained soil. I planted it in a wet site in spring, dry in summer, but I will be watering all summer. I'm hoping it survives Spring. Added lots of perlite to the soil. Anyone had this plant more than a year that can comment? Thanks!

Mine is on it's 2nd year....the site is well drained..but not well drained enough for Asiatic lilies. Joe is lots smaller than they say, only about 2 1/2 feet tall...but a lovely marooney chocolate color.

I've been growing it for several years, ever since I read a glowing description in the White Flower Farm catalog. Here (technically, we are now zone 7) it is a rampant pest. It seems to grow just about anywhere - sun, shade, dry or otherwise. In sunny dry areas, it wilts badly every afternoon but perks right up when the heat of the day is over. Most of my soil is well-draining, slightly sandy, so I can't comment on damp sites. How wet is "wet in spring" - does that imply a non-draining area, that's sort of boggy?

If you lose, it next spring, let me know and I'll send you a couple hundred replacements.

I was never lucky enough to get my Chocolate Joe to reseed, but it was one of my favourite plants in my previous garden. The foliage was gorgeous all summer, dark brown/green but the real surprise was the silvery shower of white flowers at the end of summer and early fall. A real showpiece. I don't like the normal Joe Pye as much but it gets nice and big and it does seem to attract butterflies and hummingbirds.

Thank you both. This is a tough spot to plant in. In the spring it's wet, doesnt drain very well and water sits in there for a while. In summer it dries up and needs watered daily. Its full of clay, which I have been amending for a few years. Ajuga, sweet flag grass, Vinca, siberian Iris survive here now. They are filling in fast. Hope my little Joe makes it! Thank you diggingthedirt for that offer, I may take you up on it. : )
