Spring Hill catalog,pretty flowers

I received my Spring hill catalog yesterday, got to flipping through it last night,there are some really pretty new plants in this catalog,( new to me any way)on page 39,there is Drumstick Centaurea Mix.

Madrid Blue Lavender

Kew Red Lavender(all zone 6-10

page 37,Bicolor Star Campanula,violet-blue star shape with white centers.Pretty.

On page 13,one i really want,Gerber Giant Spinner 'Pink & White,huge blooms 8 inches across.

Double Daylilies mix,page 11.

And WOW!!!!!! PAGE 3, Burning Hearts Dicentra,gorgeous!

I am reluctant to order for Spring hill any more, i used to order from a them all the time,and received great plants, but the last 2 years, not so good.I feel bad about this,maybe they changed hands??

I also received a catalog from Gilbert Wild and Son.

Any one ordered from these guys, they have some lovely plants also.

I am soooooooooo ready for spring,i have cabin fever BAD.

Any one else find any beauties you would like to try?

Gardenwatchdog currently has 335 positive, 121 neutral, 317 negatives reviews for Springhill. They are not on the list of companies that I'm rushing out to order from.

Thanks Lynda, I totally forgot about Gardenwatchdog.
I figured they lost their reputation,maybe i will find these same plants someplace else,or wait for the seed to show up eh.

Hi Thank you. Yes I have a better camera now and it does help. I think those old ones were taken with a 3.1 megapix kodak point and shoot type so not so great. It sounds like you are doing the right thing with your brugmansia. 50 degrees is fine for them. Mine usually do okay even around 34F at night as long as no frost actually gets on them. Once it freezes hard then they can turn to mush. I move mine into the greenhouse here if I want to keep them growing throughout the winter or if they have seedpods on them that I want to mature because they usually get them most pods in the fall. I am not a salesperson. I just grow them for a hobby :) You could try putting your brugs in a little more afternoon shade when it is outside for the spring/summer etc.(try sunny morning and dappled afternoon shade) and that might help improve the leaves. Brugs normally have nice big leaves and loose a lot of moisture from them so some extra afternoon shade sometimes helps. They also need lots of fertilizer- way more than normal plants do. In their natural habitat, they often grow on human refuge piles or other areas where debris and natural compost seem to pile up. Just make sure they are well watered when fertilizing.

I stopped in tonight on the way home from working at the Quilt show in Columbus. There was a great selection there. I picked up two Korean firs (bare root), and a Mint Julep rose (bare root) and some other interesting things. I was trying to be good as I've been composting some of my plants lately (too much plant too little space and salvia (Friesland, or May night...I can't tell which....long story) which has decided to grow itself everywhere dispite my efforts to keep it deadheaded.). I managed to keep myself under $20 which was great. There looked like there would still be healthy stuff this weekend, in fact, most of the plants look pretty healthy. If you're going, head directly to the "perennial greenhouses" as they aren't in the main building at the back...they're still trying to sell the clothing and stuff......

Spring Hill nursey is having its annual "cart sale" today. Everything and anything you can load on your cart for $25. They had lots of blueberries, blackberries, roses, tropicals, butterfly bush, hydrangea, viburnum, grasses. Flowers: coreopsis, phlox, scabiosisa, more. No gaillardia, coneflower, daylily or lavender. Also, their small fruit trees (I saw apples, pear, apricot) for $5, larger sizes (which I didn't investigate) are more. They are open 10-5 today, 11-4 tomorrow.

You'll love Murfreesboro - we moved here from NJ about a year ago, about 10 to 15 minutes from MTSU (Savannah Ridge subdivision). Almost all of our neighbors in our subdivision are from California or the northeast! The town is growing at a rapid pace, and we can't wait for the new Avenue outdoor mall to be completed. Although there are traffic issues, there are tons of new roads and intersections being built off of I-24 which should alleviate those problems within a few years. We were considering Spring Hill and Smyrna, too, but eventually decided on Murfreesboro - we think you'd like it here! If you need a trustworthy real estate agent, let me know - Ours was incredible, Terrie Sandefur with Prudential Rowland. Good luck with your move!

cAROL, Check out Bluestone Perennials. They have excellent customer feedback on Gardenwatchdog and are a Top 30 company. They guarantee every plant they sell. I've been buying from them more than 4 years and don't even look at the Michigan Bulb or Springhill catalogs anymore. If you're going to mail order anything, give Bluestone a look. Their website is easy to navigate too. Helps if you know botanical names but you can use their search engine if you're looking for something specific and only have the common name. They also offer a free catalog and it's a beautiful one with lots of plant info.

I second Bluestone. The plants are a little small, but grow like gangbusters! I ordered several things from them last year, and all thrived and did very well. :)

I ordered for the 1st time from Bluestone, and their customer service is great! I called a couple of times with questions cuz this is the 1st time I've ordered plants thru the mail and they were always patient and helpful.

I can't wait til my Arizona Gaillardia gets here! (April)

I orderd from them years ago and michigan bulb and was disapointed with both.

I will try bluestone if I do order.

Arizona Gaillardia sounds nice....I hope you save seeds!

Keep the Spring Hill catalog for ideas only..their reputation and also yous mentioned Michigan bulb isn't great. Their catalog used to have some great garden plans that you can implement yourself by planting your own seeds according to their plans. Stick with companies that are recogonized by Dave's garden or by members on this website. You can always use the SH and Michigan bulb catalog for making seed envelopes for trades. Pictures from Annie's annuals catalog made very beautiful seed envelopes for me, once BR from South Boston, Va. send me simple instructions to follow.

I have always had good luck with Spring Hill replacing my plants that died but I have had better luck with the Bluestone plants staying alive.

gaillardia arizona sun is a dwarf, which I like, cuz the regular ones always flop over.

I ordered once from Spring Hill and that was enough of that. I think everything I got from them died.

I order every year Bluestone and have not been disappointed. Stay away from Spring Hill and its sister companies, they are all crap.

I agree about Springhill and Michigan bulb. I just looked through their catalogs and was burned to see the prices they charge for bulbs and bare root plants. I can pay the same or less at my local fancy nursery and get a much bigger plant in terrific health.

Since comparing bulb prices a few years ago, I no longer buy bulbs from anyone but Van Engelen's. Their quality, customer service, and prices can't be beat.

Their catalog doesn't have photos (because they are wholesalers), but their sister (retail) company, John Scheepers, does have photos, so get their catalog and see everything Van Engelen's sells.
