Rabbits ate my new roses

What can i do to stop the rabbits from eating my roses on
my rose bush?...Ive seen rabbits and i know they will eat
roses even the thorns.. So i need help.. i have more rose bushes it will be enjoying soon :(

I used a light amount of blood meal around the rose and it is still working.

I cut my Gold Mounds to that height every spring, just before the leaves pop out. It keeps the roots healthy, gives me LOTS of new growth that has the brightest color as bush fills in. My bush will then keep that great color way into summer, before greening out. The bushes are all back to full height as fall comes. I trim in spring, just in case something wants to nibble or breaks off the top during winter. I have not had any problems with this spring trimming. I do the Lime Mounds as well. Those various Spireas are always covered in blooms as they grow back in. No ill-effects from annual shearing at all. Again, I think the spring cutting makes better color and flowering in these short Japanese Spireas. Bloom on new growth. Rabbit saved you some work! I don't trim or remove growth on the White bush, taller type Spirea, because I want the long, flowing branches with flowers on them. They bloom on old wood. Trimming early would take that bloom off, so no flowering that year. I might prune some AFTER bloom time, not before.

Steph, A few weeks ago I planted five Exburys: three 'Berryrose' and two 'Satan', and each morning I noticed some branches had been pruned. The cut ends were at about 45 degrees, almost like they were intentionally knifed by someone! After some on-line research, I found an IPM article that said rabbits prune plants in exactly that fashion. So I went back to the Depot and replaced the worst 'Berryroses' with more $5 versions, and built a chicken-wire fence around this bed. So far, no more damage has occurred, and the damaged plants I left in the ground are sprouting some new leaf buds, but they have a long way to go before they look respectable. By the way, a 'Klondyke' I planted last year is looking pretty healthy with lots of new leaves sprouting, but the flower buds are only now starting to swell at all. Have any other Great Lakes area folks found their deciduous azaleas to be extra-late this year? A.J.

I agree that blood meal works in some cases, but I would not have used it because I would never have thought that they would eat the hydrangeas. Maybe I did not realize that they were rabbit food! Rabbits chewed the top off a baby fig that I carefully nurtured in a pot all summer and then planted in the fall. I am hoping that it will recover just like the hydrangeas. Someone told me that deervick (spelling??) worked as a deterent for both deer and rabbits. Anyone have any experience with it?

rabbits have to be very hungry to go after pine ... i have a couple hundred various pine.. and never saw rabbit damage on such ... but a lot on other types of trees and shrubs ... dead branches.. with no live buds.. are .. well... dead .. no dormant buds on pine.. so they can all be taken off ... and it looks like it might leave you with one branch down low.. and that would look silly ... so probably take that one also .. man i hate sideways pix ... is the top brown and dead also ??? we should Id the pine .. is it a special cultivar ... meaning.. worth money??? if not.. it might be time to start over ... ken

Make a cylinder out of poultry fencing and put it around the base of each rose. For rabbits it only needs to be about 2' tall.

A lot of my roses died before I wised up. Go to home depot and get a roll of hardware cloth or chicken wire that is 2 feet tall and some wire. Using the wire cutters from a pair of electricians plyers cut the chicken wire into 5 foot long pieces and wire it together into cylinders. Place a cylinder around a young rose bush and secure with sticks so the wind doesn't blow it away. Use safety goggles and gloves.

Most reliable safe and harmless deterrant for deer, rabbits, etc is The Scarecrow by Contech.

Seriously, it's the only thing that's reliably worked for me and i don't have to look at ugly chicken wire, spray liquid that washes off, etc.

They're $50 but worth the investment when you consider the amount of money you put into your yard. I got mine from Do My own Pest Control. It arrived in 8-9 days. (you don't have to apply the silly beak and eye stickers. Mine's all black and can hardly see it)
There are lots of videos on YouTube about it.

At a historic house here in my town, I watched rabbits reduce a mature plant of 'Mothersday' from 4-ft, to 6-ins., and down to NADA. They're no joke.

I would surround young plants with hardware cloth until they are mature. And pray.

I have heard horror stories from other locations about rabbits... :-O

I use hardware cloth covered with green vinyl to protect my roses--less rust and looks better.

Do you grow onions? My sister grew onions in the winter. She harvested them in spring and disposed of the big leaves. You put those leaves around the young rose plants and no rabbits will come even close to them.

I was confronted with the terrible knowledge today that my baby is a killer.

I recommend a terrier as rabbit prevention and deterrent.

Ick.
