Which of these Old Garden Roses (OGR) sucker or spread?

I am new to OGR. I am doing a garden project for a non-profit organization. The zone is 7b. I plan to prune annually to maintain a neat appearance. I do not want to bring troublesome plants to their property. The goal is to plant the roses on the perimeter of the property. Which of the roses below should be (1) avoided because they are invasive; (2) plant in a container because they spread some, and (3) okay to plant in the ground because they do not spread.

Here is the list of OGR:
1. Rock Rose* (Cistaceae, ancient)
2. Autumn Damask* (ancient)
3. Boule de Neige (Bourbon, 1867)
4. Honoraine de Brabant (Bourbon, age unknown)
5. Souvenir de la Malmaison (introduced 1843)
6. Beauty of Rosemawr (Tea, 1903)
7. Old Blush (China Hybrid, 1852)
8. Friz Nobis (Tea Hybrid, 1940)
9. The Doctor (Tea Hybrid, 1936)

Marchesa Bocella* (Hybrid Perpetual, 1842)
Enfant de France (Hybrid Perpetual, 1860)
Duke of Edinburgh (Hybrid Perpetual, 1860 to 1869)
La Reine (Hybrid Perpetual, 1842)

I have grown most of these roses, and none of them has a suckering habit in my experience.

Gallica roses -- in my experience -- sucker the worst.

The Doctor, being a mid-20th-Century Hybrid Tea Rose, was more or less bred to be budded onto rootstock. I don't know how well it will do on its own roots -- I'd have the same question re. Fritz Nobis, but I have not grown it myself, or seen it grown.

I have grown several of the roses you list, and none of them suckered for me.

In my experience, gallicas and rugosas are the worst, but most once-blooming OGRs of European descent sucker to some degree, albas, centifolias, mosses, damasks, the lot. Other roses might now and then but it is pretty rare. Based on this, Autumn Damask might be considered to be at some risk for suckering (though it repeats), but mine never did in the 10 years I had it.

Sometimes roses will surprise you. Rose de Rescht suckers. So, to a modest degree, does the found HP Grandmother's Hat. But these are exceptions.

Thank you for posting, I'm always delighted to see an Old Garden Rose grown where I might not expect it to be growing. I visit the home gardens of vintagegardens.com every year, and they sell the original form of "Anna Olivier" which has apricot and buff hues. You might e-mail and ask if they will have it for sale later this year, as they rotate their inventory of roses for sale, during each year. vintagegardens' "Anna Olivier" is the most strongly scented Tea rose I've ever smelled, with a deliciously heady blend that includes ripe stone-fruit, Damask rose and mixed floral scent notes. I blush to say that I crave the fragrance of "Anna Olivier" as if it were a drug. Lux.

Tenor_peggy , I spray my potted roses with milk and garlic and all the leaves look healthy even the HPs. I accept spraying because just about every plant I have (zinnias, vegetables, etc) have to be sprayed to reduce the pests and diseases. This Fall I might experiment with putting organic banana peels and cleaned eggshells (with a little cinnamon to deter ants) in the pots to see if the thin leaves will become thicker.

Some posters from your area will probably come along and give you some good advice, but in the meantime, let me get you started. If you are not going spray, then you are going to have to search out the roses that are very disease-resistant. That includes roses like Knock Out--which is why it is doing fine. I haven't grown most of the roses on your list, but I have seen roses like zephirine drouhin and abraham darby on blackspot magnet lists. In other words, don't even try to grow them if you aren't going to spray. Two things you can do now. 1)Check out the thread I started tonight about "Year-end Review: What are you Blackspotters" (or something like that). You don't want to grow any of those roses. 2) Go to the search box at top or bottom of the page and type in "disease resistant" or "blackspot"--that should call up dozens of threads talking about what roses you should or shouldn't be growing. And yes, there is hope for you. Since you are already becoming obsessed with roses (like the rest of us), just continue on learning more about roses, and you too can develop a lovely garden of roses--I promise you. Kate

soooo beautiful, bgrose, and I'm so happy/thrilled that you are placing these very rare special roses on our Rose Gallery! I wish more antique rose people would post at our Gallery, because it lets us see all the rare historical roses. What a unique coloration Yuka is. Krista loves her Odier and Oger roses too and once recommended them as roses that would do really well in my zone. Alas, all pinks fade to white in my garden, so I can no longer get any pinks except for the deep, deep pinks. I've got an overload of pink roses that make my garden look like nothing but white roses, lol! Carol, I told Wes, a friend to either get Ispahan or Kazanlik, because those were the 2 roses that would have bloomed during Marie Antoinette's time. He was real fascinated by the painting of Marie Antoinette carrying her rose and wondered what pink rose it might have been. Ispahan or Kazanlik are very ancient and date in the very early 1700s, maybe even the late 1600s, when roses first came to Europe. They are once-bloomers, but the history goes waaaaaay back further than even the Old Blush Damask roses and are actually the ancestors of the very first European damask rose. That is if my memory serves me correctly. Probably the antiques people can help out in case my dates are screwed up. During the height of Marie Antoinette's reign, the Queen helped introduce them as the "haute couture" flower, lol! At the time there were just a bare handful of species of roses. Some of the Kazanlik did have enough petal layers though what I saw of the Peter Beales rose, but! I did tell Wes that I did think it was Ispahan over the Kazanlik.... Bgrose, your Ispahan would go beautifully with that painting :) Thanks for sharing all your Lovely roses.

I have no idea about the Rock Rose but neither of the others will give you any trouble in the ground. The sucker that might appear on Autumn Damask, is single, appears near the plant, and only once every leap year.

When you say Grandmother's Hat suckers, I have to say -- It doesn't sucker in any meaningful way. It doesn't sucker in "Gallica-style". It doesn't sucker as I've known Multiflora rootstock to do, here.

We planted an own-root Belle Isis in a 15-G Nursery Squat sunk in the ground. A year later, it was popping up 5- 6-ft. away, having gone down through the drainage holes in the pot, traveling under-ground, and emerging in a new area (Where it was not wanted!).

THAT is suckering.

Putting out new canes on the outer circumference of the existing ones doesn't strike me as "suckering."

"Rock roses", family Cistaceae, despite the common name, are not roses and not even that closely related, classified taxonomically as being in order Malvales, not Rosales. They are relatively short-lived shrubs (especially if there is much summer moisture) and they do not sucker.

My Autumn Damask did sucker a little, but I wouldn't say it ran amok or was invasive.

Some of my Portlands sucker (Rose du Roi of commerce, for one), but my Marchesa Boccella (also considered a Portland) hasn't done so yet, after 5 years.

The hybrid perpetuals I have do put up canes a bit away from the base, but the expansion is very constrained, not what I call invasive (especially compared to my Gallicas and the Alba, Sappho, which are very much so).

"Old Blush" -- nope.

the only one I have is Honorine de Brabant and she has never suckered for me at all.

All of the roses you've chosen repeat to some extent, and some like Souvenir de la Malmaison repeat very well, but Fritz Nobis does not repeat, although it seems to be a very beautiful rose. I just wanted to make sure you're aware of that fact, in case it matters to you.
