B&S Intek V-Twin flooding only one cylinder ( John Deere)
Comments (6)That engine has 2 coils, they are independent of one another. Seeing spark jump the gap of a spark plug OUTSIDE of the combustion chamber does not prove there is a spark when the plug is threaded into the head. Compression changes the operating parameters enough to "blow out" a spark sometimes when a magnetron (Briggs coil) is defective. Swap the coils to the opposite cylinders and see if the problem follows the coil to the other cylinder. You will have to physically dismount and move the coils, you can't simply swap plug wires (if they would even reach). This would beat just buying a new Magnetron (as Brigg$ is $o proud of them)....See MoreTROYBILT Intek V-Twin Model445577 Type 0499 E1
Comments (3)I would go with the premise that the carb needle valve is leaking fuel and thus overfilling the bowl. The fuel runs out of the carb and into the engine and ultimately ends up in the crankcase. Starting the engine with gasoline in the oil immediately begins to boil away the gasoline as the oil heats up. The vaporizing fuel pressurizes the crankcase and the pressure vents out throught the crankcase breather which pours the escaping oil laden vapor directly into the intake manifold to be fed to the engine......hence the white smoke. Repair the carb with a new needle valve and seat. Install an inline fuel shutoff valve between the tank and the fuel filter. And learn to keep the shutoff valve closed except while you are actually running the engine. Call it BOVO for short. That means Butt Off, Valve Off. if your butt ain't in the seat, the valve needs to be off. That will insure against any of this stuff being repeated in the future. Change the oil and filter AFTER you have done the above. There will likely be some residual oil in the exhaust system that may continue to make smoke for a few minutes even after you make the repairs, but that smoke should steadily diminish until it clears up around 15 minutes or so into the first run if everything else is good. If the smoking persists, a head gasket probably is leaking. Gasoline in the combustion chamber when attempting to start an engine can contribute to head gasket failure....See MoreBriggs & Stratton 24 Hp V-Twin push rods in engine
Comments (12)Ok , I have I believe to be a 2011 Craftsman riding mower with a 48 inch cutting deck and a 24hp Intek V-twin Briggs & Stratton engine that was given to me 3/25/18 of this year. Engine model #446677 0463 E1. Previous owner said engine started backfiring while mowing then died. Since I had done auto mechanic work for several years and the mower still looked almost new I accepted it. Got it home and charged up the battery and give it a whirl. The engine completed about 4 or 5 revolution’s and it backfired. So did a little research on this issue. Found out it could be several things. So I removed the flywheel and checked for a bent flywheel keyway. It was fine. Next I pulled the valve covers and what do you know. Sitting on the mower on the left side it had dropped the pushrod out of the lower exhaust tapper and sucked it into the engine. The valve guide and spring looked fine and were not stuck as I could compress the spring and valve without any hard spots. On the intake valve it had about .0012 clearance and the pushrod was barely hanging on. The right side of the engine was almost as bad finding both pushrods barely hanging on and not dropping out of the tappers. I have tried to use a telescoping magnet and run it inside the engine just to the right of where the pushrod sets on the lobe. I’m not sure if the pushrod is steel or aluminum? Anyway no luck from that point of entry. Next I removed the oil filler tube and went from that angle but the magnet only grabbed the crankshaft and wouldn’t allow me to move the magnet all around in the crankcase to retrieve the stray pushrod. It got dark on me so I had to stop for the night. Tomorrow I’m going to drain the oil and remove the drain valve and give it a try that way and after the oil is drained I had thought about jacking up the opposite side of the mower so that the pushrod might be loose in the crankcase and slide or roll to the side of the crankcase where the filler tube and oil drain valve are and maybe get lucky and be able to retrieve it. What I would like to know is the exhaust pushrod steel or aluminum and do you have any suggestions that wouldn’t require the engine to have to be torn down ! I sure could use a engine repair manual showing how to separate the engine case if needed to extract the rougue pushrod. Anything you can suggest or can me to download would be awesome. Comments (2)May be time for a new engine or short block @ 600 hours there is a lot of wear on the bearings, cam, valves etc. Replacing the head gasket is not hard but it may not pan out in the long run, time spent striping the engine down, and replacing it just to have something else go wrong. Not trying to discourage you but you need to evaluate how the rest of the components are, you could spend a few hours and replace the head gasket and a few hours later something else will go south. If you do replace the gasket make sure you use a good strightedge and a feeler guage to make sure the head and cylinders are not warped....See Morebriggsgalaxieman
