What's eating my Rose buds? (Help)
Comments (2)I'm in Alabama and I had a very similar problem on my Don Juans. Late night and early morning I found 2 types of bugs, a small green caterpillar (tobacco bud worm?) and a small orange black caterpillar. I sprayed all my roses with 1/2 gallon water/ 1 Tbsp Orthonex Insect and Disease control and haven't seen anymore bugs, the new buds look fine....See MoreHelp please pest is eating leaves and rose buds
Comments (1)Those are bagworms. Unusual for them to attach themselves to roses, but not unheard of. Usually they are most common on Junipers or Arborvitaes. In my area (Tulsa) they can start gathering their bags in late April or May. They start out very small, and as they eat and gather leaves they grow much larger. My evergreen Arborvitae is prone to them so every few days when it's time for them to show up in late spring I start checking the foliage to see if the small ones are starting up. B.T. will kill the small ones, not so much the larger ones. I've supplied a link to an Oklahoma Master Gardener site about them...Hope this helps...Maryl Here is a link that might be useful: Oklahoma bagworms...See More'Somethings' eating my Rose buds (Help)
Comments (17)I too am having something eating holes in lots of my buds. I have never heard of rose slugs. Is it the same as the slugs that snack on my hosta and my dahlias?? Those critters can do some damage if left untreated. So what is a nematode?? Sorry but I am a newbie to roses other than knockouts. If I get some nematodes then I guess I will have to quit spraying or applying bayer?? I have been trying the bayer all in one to see how it does because I have tons of green aphids this year. Have never had such a problem with them before this bad. Sorry for so many questions. Theres always seems to be something out there trying to eat up all my plants and it drives me crazy. Comments (11)I don't know, but I can't imagine it would do them any good. I look around before I start spraying. Mealy bugs are easy to spot and to spot treat. Aphids are white, and I aim and shoot at them. I do understand your concern I won't use neem or other oils to protect my lizards and spiders. Several times a day I check the fountain for floating lady bugs and help them out. I keep telling all the ladies and little birds around here to take care of the aphids. I've only spotted them on a few roses, but did lose a planter of violas to the little suckers. c...See Morematt_in_mi
