Limiting Helianthus Spread in the Border

This spring, I planted what I'm pretty sure is Helianthus maximiliani. I left what I thought was plenty of room because I expected the plant to spread a little. It's now wanting to take over the neighborhood.

I'm considering how to confine it to a limited area, and hoping that some of you have experience doing that. How deep would edging need to be to reliably contain the runners? A few years ago, I tried to contain Equisetum hyemale with edging (ok, stop laughing, I'm trying to be serious here). I don't want to repeat that episode.

Also, does anyone have recommendations on what type of edging is best? My Helianthus is planted near the crest of a berm, so the contour of the bed is not flat. I've read reviews on a few different "pound-in" edgers, that described installation as "like trying to pound pieces of cardboard into the ground". I need something that will actually work.
