Tree keeps coming up in my garden

We built a concrete patio 10 years ago when we built our house in a lot that had been wooded. We cleared for the house and yard. For 10 years I've had these nasty little trees continue to come back even after I spray them with Roundup brush spray. The leaves darken a little and it wilts and dies, but several weeks later a new sprout comes up. I'm afraid we built the patio on some awful tree roots and these things will never go away for good. I've attempted to pull these "sprouts" but they are VERY deep and do not budge. I've even tried digging them up and get 6-8 inches down to a large root but it seems to go on endlessly. The leaves resemble a wild cherry. Any advice?

let the sprouts grow enough to have small green leaves, then immediately paint the leaves and small trunks with a mixture of shrub & brush killer with diesel fuel.

Mix the brush killer and diesel fuel in a small metal pail.

Make sure to wear protective gloves and long sleeve shirt and long pants with your feet covered. Also it would not hurt to wear goggles.

Keep brushing the mixture on the unwanted sprouts until it is used up.

If you have any stumps which keep wanting to sprout, you can stop it if you recut the stump down to fresh wood, drill quite a few holes into the top of the stump and immediately paint the top of the stump along with any sides of that stump, which might be above ground, with the mixture of Brush and Shrub Killer and the diesel fuel.

Try not to splash the mixture on yourself or any of your outer wear.

When finished let the pail air dry before you rinse it with an abundant amount of water, or in a metal trash can with lid, just throw away the pail, if you prefer.

After that throw your outer wear into the washer and set on a at least one rinse and spin cycle. While that is processessing shower of paying special attention to cleaning your face, hair, arms, legs, hands and feet. Do not rub your skin to dry when finished showering, instead pat dry. Once redressed in clean cloths, finish with washing all the outer wear that should by them be finsihed rinsing. When the washer is stopped from the washing, do not put any of the outer wear in the dryer. Instead hang all of the washed outerwear outside to air dry.

IF all that sounds like too much, you can always also bag up all your outer wear, and instead of washing it just put it in the same metal trash can with a secure lid, Which I described above, put it out for trash pick-up

Perhaps it is a hickory. Those resprout vigorously.

any evidence of an old rotting stump anywhere within 50 feet .. shrooms and fungi are a free show of ma nature... unless literally attached to the plant .. enjoy them ... they are one of natures decomposers ... so it usually means there is stuff in the soil that needs such ... so be it ... that is a good thing ... ken

Hi Poaky1, What type of callas are you talking about? I'm assuming you are referring to the white ones, which are called zantedeschia aethiopica - quite a mouthful! I grow mine in pots, then just bring the entire pot into the house after first frost and leave them in the dirt all the time, through winter, spring, summer and fall, never removing them. After I bring them outdoors in May, they bloom just fine if I give the pot enough sun. I've also read that they need high phosphorus to bloom well, so maybe you should try some phosphorus on your plants. I'm jealous that you've had yours overwintering in the garden. Mine in the pots have produced quite a few babies so I will break apart the soil this year in the pot and separate a baby from his mom and try to plant in the garden, very very deep as I am in Zone 5.

As I said before, birds spread them everywhere. They are invasive and often lacking in flavor. If you want a mulberry then plant a cultivar known for having good fruit. Oh, and I forgot to mention that since birds love the fruit, what goes in must come out so... Rodney

no real is available.. until you properly ID the plant ....

any chance you can post a pic .. so we can help ...

once you know what you are trying to kill ... you will probably be much more successful ...

if you are trying to kill that 100 foot tree that is 50 feet away from the patio with selective application of a herbicide.. you will never do it ...

it may have nothing to do with the roots you are talking/thinking about...

i have a dozen huge cherries in the yard... what i call PA furniture rather than fruit cherries... they do not root/resprout from the roots .... but they and the birds do plant a billion seeds per year ... but the seedlings are affected by credit/roundup in infancy ....

Thanks for the suggestions. It was storming last night when I posted so I didn't get a chance to photograph it. I'll try tonight and post the pics.

I'm new to this board and can't figure out how to add images. I did the test in the test gallery and it was fine. I just don't know how to do that on the Trees forum. Sorry.
