Can this dwarf alberta spruce be saved?
Comments (9)get rid of it.. its not a question of whether it will live.. or recover its a question of how long it is going to be.. before it looks good again.. and that could be 3 to 5 years.. for a TREE that you can replace for under 10 bucks ... and do mind.. ITS A TREE.. otherwise known as a conifer.. and its root system.. should be as big.. if not double.. the size of what you see above.. and when you wrap your head around that.. and look at the pot its in.. you should be able to fully understand.. what its root problem is [pun intended] .... but for bonsai ... trees do not have a long life potential in pots... divest for sure .. ken...See Moreremoving Dwarf Alberta Spruce -- roots and stump issues
Comments (5)think of the rotting roots as compost for your new tree ... one would think that a better question a novice would ask .. is how do i plant the new tree ... the first answer is NOT IN AUGUST .... if you already have it... and it is potted.. sink the pot and all in the hole.. and come back in mid September ... and plant it when the nights are cool .. and the days are cooler than now.. you really cant disturb its water production capacity in the absurd heat of summer.. and expect it to thrive .... back to the rotting roots... you will probably have a cool mushroom show for a few years as the roots decay .. consider such a free show ... they are just feasting on the rotting wood from the dead tree ... good luck ken...See MoreDwarf Alberta Spruce ~ help!
Comments (3)Hello, ditas. Good to hear from you. And sorry to hear that the pine tree is having trouble. I am curious to hear what do they say over there so post back when you can. I know that needles that are shed do not usually grow back but that does not necessarily mean that the plant is dead. It would worry me if the needles that are falling off are at the ends of the branches, as that could suggest a root problem or that a borer that has drilled into the trunk. If the leaders look ok and you can determine the causal agent, the tree may do fine. By the way, there was one exception to the nedles not growing back story... I once read that, after a spider mites infestation, one can see new needles on a n-e-w twig on the following year. As usual with oakleaf hydrangeas, watch out for too little or too much water problems & drainage problems. TIA, Luis...See MoreDwarf Alberta Spruce problem
Comments (42)I overwintered my 4ft dwarf alberta spruce on my 3rd story balcony (In a 16" diameter pot) and it came back just fine this spring. Now with this very hot weather I have noticed alot of browning and needles falling off. I have been watering things plenty (and not too much). I have had problems with spider mites on my roses which I have been taking care of by spraying them daily with water. The spruce is between two Annabelle hydrangea's that are close to the base of the tree (not completely covering it though). I'm just not sure what is the issue with the tree... if it is just not getting enough sunlight because of the hydrangeas... or if it is spider mites. Upon closer inspection I couldn't find any signs of spider mites. The tree sent out new growth this spring and the whole thing was freshly green and now some of the new growth is beginning to wilt, dry up, and eventually lose needles....See Morejimbobfeeny
