Hey Fred, where have you been?

Do you mind if I ask where you find descriptions/sizes of AV's? The reason I'm asking is, yesterday, I jotted down a complete list of all my Av's, those with names. My goal was to find sizes..Standard/Large, etc.

Went back to my first post, looking for names/sizes you so generously took time to type. But there are still some AV's I can't find, even after spending a couple hours browsing the 4 nurseries new AV's were purchased.

If you or anyone else can help I'd apprecaite it.

One other thing, there are a few violets listed on sites that were coined Standards. The problem is, you listed the same violets as Large. I'm confused. LOL.

There are only a few:

Midnight Valentine

Ness Orange Pekoe

Jean Pierre Croteau

Also, I've seen the term, 'Large Standard' named for a few violets..Is the name self-explanatory? Is a Large Standard a size somewhere between Standard and Large?

One other thing. Do you recall me mentioning a violet won on Ebay with letters/numbers written on the cup/pot? Someone said it sounded like an ID number, (of seller) not the name of the plant.

It read, CZ0499 on the pot/cup, in marker.

Ironically, while browsing Violet Gallery, sure enough, CZ0499 popped up as the name of violet. It's under Senks. Unfortunately, it couldn't be clicked to open picture.

Sorry, the CZ0499 is under 'Wasps Varieties,' not 'Senks,' on VG. CZ0499 is a Semi Mini Trailer. Toni

Here Toni, I am looking them up on my FC2 for you. Maybe you ought to think about buying a copy, it's a great software to have. You can buy it thru the AVSA site.

has any one tried using praetor nematodes and praetor mites to control spider mite, broad mites and thrips. They are like little lions feeding on the pests, praetor nematodes live in the ground killing any thing they find and most of the pest live part of their live there. Thrips spend the first part of there live under ground. The praetor nematodes come in a little sponge that you cut 1/3 of put in a spray bottle of water and let it sit for a 1/2 hour, shake it up and spray the surface potting mixe and then water them in good. It cost $18.00and the 2/3 that you have not used put in the cooler and treat you plants ever 2 weeks till it is gone. They will live on the sponge in the cooler for 6 weeks. I also treat my plants with praetor mites at the same time , they like to find the bad mites and lay their egg among the spider mites and broad mites eggs . When the praetor mites they are hunger an the love to eat mite eggs. they come in several different ways praetor mites"NEOSEIULUS CUCUMERIS" come in quick release packets $1.99 and it is enough to treat 1-2 plant racks 4 shelves 48 in. long. You springily the product which looks (it is ) wood saw dust over the plants It is import to do these after dark. sun light kills praetor mites nematodes & praetor mites mites!!!! So glad you found some jars! Very frustrating to need them and no be supplied. We have plenty of them available in Southern California, the area north of Los Angeles, Pasadena, and Altadena. We have been buying them like they are going out of style! We get ours at Smart and Final, but the OSH and Ace hardwares have them, regular supermarkets, and even the mom and pop hardware store around the corner. I suppose retailers figured out we (the public) are canning more.

To answer your question Iris Gal, no I am not starting a business. I'm just someone who loves Iris's and lost most of mine this summer. Can't stand the thought of not being surrounded by their beauty this coming Spring. Walter could you please email me and tell me more about your iris's? Glucosamine/chondroitin is an OTC joint supplement. You can get it at a human drug store. I personally go to Costco for their Kirklands brand, which is the most economical choice since my husband, myself, and all 4 dogs take it daily. $21/200 tablets. Hmm, I wouldn't think of hepatitic lipidosis OR hepatitis without any kind of clinical signs. I don't think I've ever seen a hepatitic lipidosis animal that was eating (anorexia is usually the cause of their problem, and it's not common in dogs anyway) or that wasn't jaundiced. And usually dogs with hepatitis have decreased appetite (not all though; my B'Elanna ate well throughout her hepatitis too), increased drinking/urination, sometimes other more serious problems such as hepatitic encephalopathy, hypoproteinemia, and others. My B'Elanna was a little lethargic, but she was also VERY yellow, which is why we knew to look for liver disease. Personally I would have an ultrasound and liver biopsy done. Between those tests, you'd get a ton of information, such as are there liver masses or nodules, is there steroid hepatopathy (like with Cushing's disease which is common in poodles), you can do special stains for copper accumulation, etc. The ALT is a little more concerning because that is more liver specific and indicates liver cell damage. But that could be secondary to other things such as Cushings, nodular regeneration, etc. OTOH, my Aleksander lived the last several years of his life with an ALKP in the 1200s and he did not have any disease that would cause that elevation. He eventually died of stomach cancer, but that wouldn't cause elevated ALKP and in fact his ALKP was lower when he got sick. Again I know many dogs who just have a higher ALKP. If we can't find a cause for it after a good workup and the dog seems fine, we just kinda say OK, it's normal for that dog and continue to monitor it once every 6-12 months as long as dog stays healthy. I'd do bloodwork every 6 months on any dog over 8 years old anyway; now your guy has an even better reason than just routine senior care. Anyway, since he's feeling fine, I wouldn't rush into anything, but I would get the ultrasound and biopsy done. You may do a bunch of other tests and find nothing. If you have results of other bloodwork, I'd love to see them. In the meantime, keep up what you're doing because your dog seems to be doing well with it.

I have a group of unnamed AV;s in 4" plastic pots bought locally. All are rootbound. Should I increase pot size or keep in the 4" pots? Thanks, Toni

IL had major electric, wind, rain storms yesterday/last night..I had to go outside, pick up felled plants..what a mess!!

Leaf diameter...7-12" across.

Okay, Toni, you know the answer to this one! What's the formula again? It hasn't changed since the last ten times you asked the same question, LOL.

LOL Barbara..No actually I don't..Please let me explain.
I know the formula hasn't changed, but this whole 1/3rd thing is baffling and new to me.
Let's say an AV is 12" across. That would mean it goes in a 4" pot, right? Right. Which is the size most of my standard AV's are in. This is the problem. When I remove an Av from its 4" pot, the roots are so rootbound, when watered it runs right through..Do you understand what I mean?
Going up to a 5", if there's such a thing, (according to correct potting procedure) would be too large, right?
BTW, the plastic pots AV's are in, (older AV's (4-6+ yrs) are in pots they were purchased in.) have 4" rims but taper down, therefore, the rim is 4" but right below rim to bottom would probably be 3". You know how pots are shaped???
One other thing. With most plants, roots need room to grow. If a plant is extremely rootbound, chances of growth halts. Wouldn't that apply to 'Large' AV's, too? In other words, I'll use Tiger as an example. If Tiger is totally rootbound, would 'she' halt growing if her roots don't have room to grow? The same applies to fertilizer? Toni

if you want to grow a monster Tiger - you need to keep doing consistent repotting - every 6 months and disbudding. If you will do disbudding - all the energy will go into growth. If you let them bloom - the growth will slow down - and 12 inches diameter is plenty large to me, you just get it out of the pot, remove a row of old leaves, trim a rootball from the bottom - may be 1/2 inch, may be a bit more, add fresh soil on the bottom of the same size pot, ad fresh soil on the top = and off it goes to bloom and make me happy for another 6 months.

Extremely rootbound means it sits in this pot way too long.
