JFK - First blooms, but what's next for this rose

So here is a picture of my new JFK HT. This bud was the product of the plant from the nursery pot and transplantation. It was slightly yellow and had a magnificent pink edging. Very pretty to look at, but not a white rose like it is to be.

Buds will open in a week or two that were formed since being planted in my garden and I'm so hoping that they will be white.

Thoughts? Predictions?

On top of the planting into the garden we had extremely variable temperatures when this bud was developing and opening. I'm hoping that those factors are what contributed to this coloration.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news....but that looks an awful lot like Peace to me. Even the foliage. My Peace is blooming right now and the blooms look very similar to that. I will post a picture here for comparison.

Congrats! I have a JFK and he's a real showstopper. In his 5th year, 8 feet tall, gives me huge blooms. I had real problems with aphid infestations on him the first couple of years, but got ladybugs two years in a row, and that seems to have fixed it up. Enjoy yours!

You must be in Fla or S. Cal - so nice to have so much color! I finally have crocus & hyacinth blooming, but thats about it. I can't even put my Dahlias out for another month. I use a MacBook Pro - so not sure what IPad's have on them. If you have "Preview" on there you can pretty much do anything you need to your photos.

I have grown Queen Elizabeth in Atlanta. Beautiful blossoms, bloom all summer. The black spot is the problem that gets them by the end of the summer. I don't use pesticides, so I try to control it by picking up leaves on the ground and occasionally using organic sprays. I have had two gardens and in the first one, it took a few years before the spot started. In my new garden, I have two plants and one just got spot and it is touching another plant, so it must have gotten more moisture. Even when the leaves fall off from the spot, you still have pretty flowers. I always have the climber New Dawn, which has better resistance (in my experience), and is easy. If you could see the bug, then it's not rose midge. Rose midge is entirely too small to see. Nothing about grafted v. own root makes one more susceptible to midge than another. Bare root plants can still be carrying midge, our local pest expert recommends that any rose from a garden harboring midge be bare rooted and then the roots dipped in an insecticide solution before moving it to another garden. You can lose an entire bloom cycle to midge. I have. The first year I had significant midge problem in my garden, I didn't realize it until I realized it was way past time for the roses to start blooming and I had almost no flowers still. They grew fine, but no blooms. The subsequent bloom cycles usually are better, the midge mainly seems to hit the first cycle but that's the most highly anticipated flowers and the ones you need for any exhibitions. From what I recall, it was a certain ownroot rose nursery in NorCal that was the locus of the first confirmed rose midge populations on the west coast (it's an east coast native) and it was plants from this nursery that were spreading it around and introduced it to the PNW. Or was that how it was introduced into California gardens? don't remember but it was definitely an ownroot rose nursery spreading it. Rose midge shows no preference for living in the ground over living in potting soil.

Josh, I agree. My bloom looks a lot like your Peace Rose. I too have a Peace Rose, but it is very thorny in comparison to my wanna be JFK.
Also, it appears that the bloom in your pic is more peach tinted to the center while mine was perhaps dirty white approaching a tinted yellow.

Thanks for posting. I'll be sure to follow up when this bush blooms again.

Scott, Happy Father's Day to you too from a mom who appreciates dads very much :)

I bought a JFK this year and it's blooms (what the thrips didn't desiccate) were pure white with a little yellowing tinge (think lemon sorbet). No pink hints at all but I only have three blooms to go off of.

The John F. Kennedy rose that grew in my garden was a very pure white with hints of pale green in the early stages of the bloom.

Thank you to all for your input.

A sad day here to be sure. Once I dead head Barbara Streisand this evening, I will have 10 rose bushes and not a bloom to be seen. They are coming, and I am grateful for the beautiful first flush of the season and for the lush growth of each of the rose bushes. Even the bare roots, which are in the ground just 13 days are looking remarkable.

Tomorrow is day 14 since the day I nearly murdered them by not following the directions for the planting of bare root roses. You name the rule, I didn't follow it. Perhaps I'll take a picture. They are really taking off since the post at day 9 or 10.

Found a lovely little perennial today, Sweet Lullabye. Only gets 6 inches tall and has lavender spikey flowers. I put that front and center of the bare roots. I just needed something there as they are in a bed separate from the other 8 roses (3 in there 2nd year and 5 in their first).

Well, the second round of buds are coming on my Peace and JFK roses. I am now thinking that I had a senior moment in remember which bush I placed where.

I'm starting to agree that my picture posted in this thread is actually the Peace Rose, as the new blooms on the other rose look more like JFK this time around.

I am so annoyed with myself.
