May I introduce Madame Abel Chatenay?

She may be a Hybrid Tea, but she doesn't act like one. Right now she's between flushes, but she still has two lovely blooms.

This photo was NOT taken in blackspot-free California but rather in humid Central Florida. Notice NO yellow or black spots at all on her leaves. This rose loves Florida.

In the winter (maybe December and definitely January and February) she's deciduous and drops her leaves, staying bare until early spring. She is one of my favorites, and I think her flowers are the prettiest I have. No shrinking in the heat either. They're easily 3" across.

What a beautiful rose, Sherry. I can see why she's a favorite of yours. I especially like the part about not shrinking in the heat. It's not even that hot yet here but already some of my roses look pathetically small. She's definitely going on my list of roses to consider in the future.

Ingrid, I can't get over how healthy she stays all the time - even when just a baby. I don't know about PM. I don't get PM much if at all. I'm so glad she's in my front yard. No embarrassing BS or bare canes. It makes her a very satisfying rose. I noticed this morning she's got lots of buds. This will be her 3rd flush. I hope she does well for you. I think if I had to pick 2 roses for my garden, it would be her and you-know-who with SdlM being 3rd runner up. She's a lot healthier than you'd expect.

Because many Austin roses are nearly as hybridized as Hybrid Teas, (being bred mostly from Florabunda class roses) the earlier H.T.s should go well with them. The first two H.T.s, have a growth habit that is bushier and more attractive than the typical H.T.. 1. "Snowbird" is a white H.T. that has an old fashioned bloom style. Very fragrant, of floral perfume with a hint of lemon zest. 2. cl. "Mrs. Herbert Stevens" I would grow this because all the white Tea roses I've grown have mildewed badly in my organic rose garden, near San Francisco. "M.H.S. blooms early with the Tea roses in spring, while other H.T.s must wait c. a month later to bloom. Bushy and as floriferous as a Tea, it can be grown as a free standing bush. I hope vintage gardens sells it again soon. 3. "Sunday Lemonade" is the light pink sport of "Lemon Spice". S.L. opens to show a frilly old fashioned bloom style. It's real strength in beauty is as a cut flower. Fragrant. 4. "W.E. Lipcott" I saw this rose at Luannes and thought it was an H.P. at first. It has that plush style of bloom. It is very fragrant, of damask rose. The color blends from a rich rose-pink through rose-red, and would be stunning beside, or in front of a taller white rose. Luanne uses organic methods too, and the bush appeared to be quite healthy, in our powdery mildew prone climate. Lux.

This is a light pink sport of the famous Madame Isaac Pereire and has the same fragrance. It is extremely productive in Spring. Early blooms in the season are carried on short stems if trained as a climber. Second and third flushes are carried on longer stems suitable for cutting. This is my MIP in the photo. She is fairly thorny. Canes are quite stiff too.

I would love to visit Peter Schneider's nursery in lilac time. As far as General Sherman, there is a nursery that carries it nearer to me. It's the Lavender Lady Lilac Nursery in the Hudson Valley. I couldn't grow it myself. The only one I grow myself is Syringa × laciniata, which is a smaller one. Would have to persuade a friend with a bigger garden to try it. I learned about General Sherman last year while smelling the lilacs, as we do every year at the BBG, and this one, which I had never noticed before, smelled great. I wrote down the name and when I looked it up at home learned that Father Fiala in his Encyclopedia gave it very high praise. It is interesting that many of the most fragrant ones are doubles, but this is a single with a delicious perfume. I have to say that I am prejudiced toward everything antique, because I feel they need conserving, and also being closer to the species they are often most graceful, but some of the newer lilacs look pretty alluring also. We should be like the Japanese and have public festivals for many beloved varieties of flowers, Lilacs, Roses, Lindens, etc.

Sherry, every time you mention this rose, you sing her praises, and I am tempted to purchase her immediately. You post the lovely photos to back up your opinions, too. This time I've succumbed to the temptation and ordered her. Fortunately, I caught the end of Roses Unlimited "buy one get one free" sale and will be able to look forward to the arrival of two new roses. Where will I put them?

That's wonderful for you, Kathy. But I want to know how RU can have a sale and I not know about it until it's over. Doesn't RU email its customers???

Actually, Sherry, I looked at RU's website not too long ago and never saw any mention of a sale then. It was your last post suggesting that Mme. Abel Chatenay might be on sale later this summer that prompted me to check their site again. I seem to remember that they had a sale last summer.

I remember they had a couple of sales last summer, but I didn't know about this one. Good thing I mentioned it, huh? I was amazed to see her on sale. It is such a good one for me. I hope she loves your garden, too. Just remember she goes bare in the winter - at least here. And she's QUITE well armed, even on her pedicels. I tried snapping them off yesterday after I had snapped off the flowers a few days ago. Ouch! Hopefully, you won't mind or you're better about remembering your gloves than I am.
