noisettes in zone 7

I'm not doing so well with noisettes in my garden. It seems to me that there are at least two general types of noisettes: 1. those that send candelabra clusters of many small flowers (e.g., blush noisette, Champney's pink cluster, Belle Vichysoise, Bougainville): 2. Those that climb and have bigger flowers singly or in smaller clusters (e.g., Lamarque, Mme. Alfred Carriere, William Allen Richardson, Duchesse d'Auerstadt). Some of these may be noisette/teas...

Well, I'm not having such good luck with the first type...especially Blush Noisette, Champney's Pink Cluster, and Nastarana. None of these is sending up many new canes. They seem to send up a 3ft cane that is topped with about 50-75 small flowers. Then the BS comes, defoliation, and, in most cases the canes die.

Do I just need to be patient and give these noisettes a few extra years to get established, or, are they just not suited for the climate as far north as I am...I read that they are ideal for the south.
