I have never gardened in Southern California. Having said that, I do not believe the damage is consistent with either insect damage or fungal damage. I suspect the damage to the leaves is either a physiological phenomenon or an expression of a virus infection.

If I am correct, no pesticide spray will help you with your problem.

Looks somewhat like Rose Mosaic Virus, but I'm not positive. My newly bought and planted Maria Stern ended up having it too. If it is, there is not much you can do about it but shovel prune and get your money back or live with it.

If it is viral, can it infect the other roses planted in the same bed? Basically, is there anything wrong with waiting a while to see if it clears up after fertilization? It's blooming great right now and is amazingly fragrant...but the foliage.. Yuck.

Decobug - I wasn't very clear earlier; the leaves started doing this while it was still in the container, before I planted it - so I doubt it's from planting stress.

End of the rose-buying season, was it dry when you bought it? I would make sure it doesn't dry out (but don't drown it) and wait. It's in the ground, right? I wouldn't fertilize it until the fall or do anything but make sure it stays moist.

Let it settle in and get used to its new location. Then when the cooler nights of September arrive give it a light hit of fertilizer and it will have a good fall.

This is a vigorous cultivar, it will be fine. In So Cal, you are not going to get much in the way of disease pressure until about Labor Day (if then).

I think you should just water it and be patient.
You should start to see some new growth within a few weeks.
Nothing I've grown has displayed leaf damage like what you showed us.

I am happy to let it be and see what happens - as long as it will not infect the other roses in the bed.

When you bring foliage problems to the Forum, it's essential to describe where on the plant and how much. That is, a stray old interior leaf with these symptoms would not indicate a problem. You told us you have a lot of these leaves, but not where on the plant.

Yellow veins can indicate either a dying leaf or a virus. If a virus, the new leaves would come in that way at the top of the plant and would stay crisp. If a dying leaf, these would usually be among the oldest leaves and would be limp or ready to drop off.

Possible causes of dying leaves are senescence (you have too many for it to be that), transplant shock (lack of available water), and waterlogging, which kills the foliage from the bottom up. I'm not sure you've had the plant long enough to kill it by waterlogging.

I definitely do not think the issue is waterlogging. When I planted it the soil and root ball came out of the container in one rock-hard chunk, even though I'd watered it a couple of times. It was as though the soil was impenetrable and the water had just passed around the soil/roots. I moistened and gently pulled apart the exterior of the soil before I planted it, otherwise it would have been akin to planting a boulder in the ground. Maybe that wasn't the right thing to do.

Also, if it changes anything, the plant is a "tree" rose.

OK then, probably it is dropping leaves from water stress. Roses in small pots or just transplanted from small pots will need water every day or two, not once a week as your account suggests. Soak the area thoroughly with 5 gallons, if you haven't already done so. Then every other day give it about a gallon (maybe less if it doesn't have a lot of foliage left). After it gets the roots out of the pot soil, you can lengthen the watering interval to once or twice a week, maybe 4 gal/week depending on soil and climate.

Michael, thank you. I do check the soil every day to make sure it is moist but not drenched, but I will give it a bit more H2O and see if that helps.

Hi, I'm also in your area and have had the same problems, including the rock hard potting soil that doesn't absorb water. A lot of my leaves do look like that, but I've decided to wait for new growth and for the roots to grow into the surrounding soil as well. I still have some nasty ones in pots, but I am going to soak the entire rootball in a bucket before planting and see what happens.
At first I thought it was rose mosaic virus, but then some of my plants developed rust on those yellow pattern leaves, so now I am just going to wait. Keep us posted on what happens and good luck.

I have two PJPII and haven't seen anything like that.
It definitely looks environmental instead of fungal or viral to me.
I would definitely suspect water deficiency or waterlogging first. Also, you might try giving it a shot of chelated iron. I have had some container roses get yellow leaves and they improved with a dose of iron added to their water.
