Pruning Crape Myrtle

curious_2009

Last year I planted two white (ACOMA) and two Red (ARAPAHO) Crape Myrtle's that were between 2 and 3 feet in height. I pruned them in early spring and they seem to be growing rapidly and nice. My question concerns whether to prune off the flowers to promote additional flowers. I went out to prune the flowers off and noticed leaves sprouting all along the flower stem. Decided not to prune until I had better insight as to what I should do. Thanks for your help !!
