new 08-09 roses on the Kordes site..........

........they look nice, but fragrance does not seem to be a priority.

Still pretty sure I'll go for Laguna, Aloha, Moonlight, and maybe Jasmina.

The roses you mention are all older roses... do you have a link to the newer roses?

My 6 Kordes roses from Palatine are thriving. Blush Circus bloomed after just two months after planting bare roots (zone 11). Flowers are huge, multi petaled pale pale pink w/ darker pink in its middle. Gorgeous blooms and healthy glossy leaves. Palatine is family run and was recommended to me directly by Kordes roses in Germany. They are licensed to carry the Kordes roses. Their bare root plants had beautiful thick canes with lush roots. Palatine provided excellent customer service helping me w/ rose selection, care, shipping and follow up.

Thanks francoise47. The web site on which I found the episodes of Season 4 is playing a cruel joke. It says "Watch Season 4 episodes here" and I click on Episode 1 Season 4. Instead of that video Season 2, Episode 1 appears. I'm con-foozed. Must not be available online yet.

A technique that I used today that isn't exactly new as I have started doing its a few weeks ago is when I need to be exact on meeting points, as in partial seams, I mark all the corners or points with an awl prick that seperates the treads a little. It is easier to see and match then pencil or pin markings. I still match with pinning pc. togeather. I also make my templates from tracing onto freezer paper and ironing the templates to the fabric. Teresa, your quilt is lovily. I like the way you quilt it. I have Pat Speth's book "More Nickle Quilts" but haven't made any yet. Strange as I got the book out Sun. and have been looking thru it.

I started my rose growing experience in SE FL (Hollywood) back in the mid 1970's. Then moved to Winter Haven for 20 yrs before spending 9 yrs in Port St Lucie. Retired in late 08 and moved to the NE GA mountains. Most of my time growing roses were in hot, humid FL. Am I an expert?? NO. But I did lean a few lessons while living and growing roses in FL.The own root roses you will be getting from Chamblees will have to go into pots. The nematodes will destroy the root systems of these roses in a mater of a few years. I grew several large roses in pots. I sank the pots into the ground with about the top 2"/4" above ground level. All of my own root roses were started in 3 gal. nursery pots for a year to get a good root system under them. Then moved into 10/15/20/25 nursery pots, depending on the variety of the rose and how big it will get. As far as disease resistant they will be for your area, I don't know. Belinda's Dream is supposed to be disease free but mine always got a little black spot by summers end. Some OGR's stay clean all year long. The best people to see for easy care roses in FL are Florida Southern Collage in Lakeland. They have a very large garden there that is cared for by the school. They will be having a pruning party sometime in February. If you can make it up to the school for their "party", you will learn a TON about growing roses in FL. Eifelzauber, La Perla, Larissa, Queen of Hearts, Souvenir de Baden-Baden, Summer Memories, and Zaide all are similar to English Roses...

Seems they are wanting to jump on that bandwagon... good for them!

Palatine roses website is a much better place to find out what is current for Kordes roses. They list 120 of them! And far easier to get than ordering from Kordes. As a K collecter there are many I would like to have that are unavailable in N. America but the hassle of importing istoo much. Patlatine has begun to have some of the older ones but still doesn't have many. Hortico carries a lot of the older and unusual.

By the way Palatine has 26 Austin's, 3 Harkness. The only other breeders I checked.

From what I hear they ship very good roses.

Kordes is indeed bringing out more OGR-formed roses. The trend is definitely picking up here. Meilland, Tantau and others are doing the same. Anyway, the newer Kordes roses I have do not yet have the very neat Austin-form. They have less petals or the petals are not as neatly arranged. They lack fragrance mostly too. But, I must say I don't really care about that. They flower very well and most importantly almost all are absolutly free from whatever disease you can have on roses. The rest gets a little bit of BS or mildew, but nothing so serious to make the plant look ugly. Growth habit depends on you buying the floribunda, HT, or shrub varieties. The floribunda varieties are mostly small, bushy upright shrubs, not those very stiffly upright candelabra-forming flori's.

Palatine sends some of the best bareroot roses available on the internet. I have purchased several Kordes roses from them and was delighted with the quality of the plants when I got them.

I'd say their current emphasis seems to be on disease resistance, and they've always been big on vigor and winter-hardiness. I'm looking forward to new Kordes roses that have some of the charm of the David Austins but are easier to grow. I prefer own-roots so my Kordes are coming Roses Unlimited-- RUs only lists 23 Kordes, mostly the older ones. I'm giving Lion's Fairy Tale (Lions-Rose) a try-- vigor good and very clean so far.
