You're not going to get much shape from an immature, year old plant. Candy Stripe can throw flowers from nearly solid pink through heavily striped, so it's impossible to judge this plant based upon the one flower. Order another if you want to, but this one may surprise you with more striping. For HT form, choose something else. WHEN you get some semblance of that form from either Pink Peace or Candy Stripe, it is very fleeting. Kim

Thanks, Kim. I wanted this one for the coloring and stripes, I guess the form just had me thrown after looking at pictures of it on the internet. I will give it some more time and hope for some stripes :)

I second Jeri's comment. I never never got a striped bloom from my plant. Where are you in Michigan again? I have a one year old rooted cutting of Grace Donnelly if you are interested.

I've tried Candy Stripe in my yard twice now, I think both times grafted and potted, and it had more or less striped blooms for its first season out of the nursery. Neither time did it remotely overwinter for me, so maybe it's a moot question for you nummykitchen in Michigan. Rock 'n' Roll or Stars 'n' Stripes Forever or Rockin' Robin are all much more reliable stripes (what is it about stripes that attracts the apostrophes?)

Cynthia, thanks for your input. It is still in a pot (with another bud, I'll see how that one turns out!) and I was planning to put it into the ground soon. If it makes it through the winter, great, if not, I'm fine with that as well. I have and LOVE Rock 'n' Roll, I just got my first blooms from my second year plant (that over wintered very nicely) yesterday. I think it is one of my favorites over all. I also did try Stars 'n' Stripes Forever last year which was nice although I wasn't crazy about bloom form. It made it through the winter and was leafing out when we had a late frost that killed it :( just dug it up today and replaced it with Cafe Ole. Haven't tried Rockin' Robin yet, will check it out!

Many yrs ago I had a grafted one that didn't stripe. A friend had gotten a grafted one from the same nursery, and it did stripe. She rooted a cutting for me, and it has remained striped all the time. I've had it for over 10yrs. Love it!

I would give that own root a chance. I think it may possibly just need some time to mature in order to keep
the striping. It'll just be a waiting game I suppose. But if you find in the
second blooming that it still hasn't shown the stripes, I would contact
RVR and send pics, and just let them know that it might not end up
striping. I'm sure they would replace it.

I have been dabbling in growing roses from open-pollinated hip seeds, and a couple of them are striped roses. But the initial blooming and sometimes the second bloomings did not show much striping at all. By summer the striping comes on in full force. One in particular, a seedling of BROADWAY that grows near a bed of several stripeys, does this every yr so far. It's still pretty small, but I think once it becomes a big, established plant, it will show stripes all the time.
