Please help African Violet is dying
Comments (0)This Violet was my husband's grandmothers who passed away. I have had it for years and it has been healthy and beautiful. Recently my mother brought me african violet food since she said she couldn't keep hers alive and therefore didn't need it. While putting a few drops on the pot the top popped off and the liquid got all over the plant. I washed it off but the violet started rotting away. I have taken it out trimmed the dead areas and changed soil, but it still is not coming back. Is there anything else I can do?...See MoreGrandma's African Violet dying fast :(
Comments (129)Hi, Irina, it is awesome to see you talking much! Elsie, I also live in CA but north. See if you can get to a violet club. They will advise on potting mix. And a million other things. Many clubs make their own mix and sell it. I buy my potting mix directly from Lyon's and buy plain perlite from Ace or any nursery. I lighten the mix with perlite. I hope you tossed Grandma's plant by now. Fungus gnats are annoying. To get rid of them once and for all, I threw out everything that looked on the verge. I repotted every plant, replacing with fresh mix, cleaning all pots. Then washed or brushed them. And groom often. As for Violet Barn, they are more for experienced growers. It can be difficult to achieve sucess with their plants and heavy, cakey potting mix. There are some local growers in California that have beautiful, strong plants. I will try to get their names. But do try to get to a club and go to the spring plant sales. You will learn a lot. Do not be concerned about distance. People carpool or rent buses to go together. California grown plants will do better for you than plants bought anywhere else. Except for Lyon's, they do well. Joanne...See MoreAfrican violet help: White spots on African violet flower petals
Comments (13)Something else I did was put my alcohol in a sprayer bottle. Properly labeled of course! That can really get where no Qtip can reach sometimes. If you have an infestation that has turned your plant mostly white with mealy then toss it. But for light infestations,,,,,try alcohol first. I have saved many plants over the years. I don't get it often. Once every few years if that. BUT I will always try to "alcohol" it first and I have never had a "spread" thru my collection. Let us know what happens! Comments (2)African Violets have flowers when they're trying to reproduce. That takes a lot of energy and plant resources, so it doesn't happen all of the time. African Violets may have periods of blooming which last 4-8 weeks or so, ... then the flowers die down ... and the plant is ready to make seeds. If you remove the faded flower stems before the plant makes seeds, ... the plant will rest and recoup its resources for awhile, ... and then will begin to try to reproduce again, starting with a period of blooming. If a plant is healthy, it may go through this cycle a few times a year, meaning that you will get flowers for extended periods a few times a year, ... separated by similar periods ... when it's resting and rejuvenating to bloom again. I just pulled the last faded blooms from one of my AV's yesterday. It will be without blooms for awhile (probably a couple months), ... then will bloom again. That is why I have more than one AV (to say the least). That way some plants can be in bloom ... while the others are resting. Right now, ... about half of my AV's ... are in some stage of bloom while the others are resting from blooming. In two months, the situation will reverse ......See Morepersephonita
