Another Timing of the Blooms query

The event is in 3 weeks. Your bushes contain different sized buds, and you plan to disbud here and there, anyway, for some nice fat blooms. Which ones do you remove?

The long-thumb nail size, the medium thumb nail size, pinkie or 1/2 pinkie nail size?

I've never paid that much attention to length of time from tiny bud to bloom. I'm hoping someone more experienced has! They are Zone 10, full sun. I am learning so much on here. Thank you!

A lot depends upon the sort of roses you're working with, Leahcate.
On an average, it takes 55-60 days from deadheading to Hybrid Tea Rose bloom. A bit less for Florries. A bit less still for Minis.

I've never seen any rhyme or reason to the time for recycling TEA roses. I think they bloom when they want to, with no regard for your imperatives.

Chinas bloom all the time, and don't care what you are doing.

jeri...I meant if there's already a bud,(floribunda)about how many days until it's a bloom.... from those various starting sizes mentioned? Also, figure our present weather
(Sunset zone 23-24) into the equation. With a cluster of buds of various sizes on a stem, I'm trying to guess which ones, by size, to remove, hoping the one(s) remaining will bloom in 3 weeks.

Product report I bought this sprayer, it came yesterday, and today I used it to apply dormant oil. I'm pretty pleased with it. It came mostly assembled, the rest was easy. The cart is substantial, it's easy to push around, the only problem is that it's back-heavy and tends to tip when empty. It reaches the top of my trees, that are all below 15', and it covers them really thoroughly, really fast. I only have a dozen trees, and some are still small, but the battery held out while I did the whole job. It does leave about a quart of liquid in the tank, but the drain is quite convenient, the tank is easy to clean out. Definitely beats the backpack. I'd recommend it for someone with a dozen or so trees that aren't too tall.

Hey, Howard! One thing we can't do is reverse soft or leggy growth. When C. ovata is grown in the shade, the leaves can grow quite a bit bigger. There's one in my neighborhood with leaves the size of small avocados. Those leaves will be shocked and burned no matter how slowly you acclimate the plant, especially in the middle of Summer. C. ovata doesn't hold onto damaged leaves for long... gets right to work at adapting. I've grown 'Hummel's' in full sun and wasn't happy with the results. The leaves turn pure yellow and eventually will number very few - the stems turn a very pretty red but growth becomes very stunted. If you want a Hummel's bonsai, grow it in full sun - it will stop growing almost completely. I prefer mine with that sun-kissed look, very much like your 1st photo. If you wanted a big plant with a big yellow canopy, I think you'd have to grow it in partial shade until it was big, then acclimate the plant to mostly sun (5-6 hours?) during the winter.

Disbudding is not the same as deadheading. You can't speed anything up or slow anything down. The best you can do is have as many good buds as possible. It depends on the vigor of the rose and how well you have cared for it. The main bud will develop regardless of what you do and later on you might if you choose to take off the side buds for appearance. However many HT's make clusters which end up looking very nice so why dsibud? I suspect bud to bloom is very fast in CA. Here under ideal conditions it is about three weeks give or take from the first time you recognize a bud to a full bloom.

*** If you are hoping for garden display, I agree with Henry.
Why disbud? Let the bushes bear sprays, if they want to -- it just means more color in the garden.
If you are planning for a rose show, of course, that's a different kettle of fish.

However, no matter what the "book" says about how long it takes, your roses will in the end be subject to the whims of the Weather Goddess.

henryinct, no I wasn't attempting to speed up or slow down the blooms, and it was selective disbudding, not deadheading I was planning. They are floribundas, not HT's. I'm hoping to have blooms for a vase or two, with some left for the garden. The stems for the vases I'd prefer to have leaner clusters. The rest can cluster their hearts out:>) That's why I'd disbud only a few stems here and there. Hmmm, I wonder if blooms ( from buds)DO come faster here than in Ct.? There, you are probably enjoying warmer days and nights than we are here in our typical June-Gloom time of year. That 3 week Ct. estimate is good to know, though. I simply wondered which size bud from teeny to mid-size, is most likely, under my conditions, to be in full bloom in 3 weeks time. They are: Eureka, Hot Cocoa, Singin' in the Rain and Grand Prize.
Jeri "planning for a rose show..." ha ha ha (or ROTFL,in web-speak)! oh how I wish I had the kind of garden so many of you on here have!! A rose show. Sigh.
I know it's largely influenced by the weather, but thought perhaps there might be an average length of time I could plan on...depending on the buds size.
Man, I am blathering on, and it seems not being very clear...sorry :>/ It's just something I've wondered about.

The other variable is temperature.
When it's hot, blooms come a whole lot faster.

For a national rose show in Pennsylvania, many serious exhibitors disbudded/cut back according to their time tested spacing to cut back and then produce buds in (let's say) 40-42 days. Then the late summer heat hit, as seldom before. Result: roses bloomed out a week and a half before the show.
And half way into the bloom cycle, there wasn't anything that they could do.

Probably only the smaller buds will be flowers in 3 weeks, but you don't want to make a mistake, so I think it's best to leave them all except those that are close to opening now.

I have all four of your floris and I have never considered getting cut flowers from any of them much less disbudding. Do you know if they will hold up? I don't know about CA but here once they get started they keep blooming all through the season until the cold weather. You can count on them for blooms any time.
