Fall Transplanting ???

I want to transplant some Jethro Tull Coreposis and am wondering if fall is OK. They are getting crowded out by my Asters.

Is fall a good time for transplanting ANYTHING?

warm days.. and cool nights is a perfect time for transplant ...

which in our zones.. that is spring OR fall ...

water deeply in advance.. and dont let them dry out in nov. ... and take a big gob of soil with them .... dig new hole first ...

i would do NO MORE than tickling them .... and then unpot and stick them in a bigger pot with THE CORRECT MEDIA for summer ... the issue is too much disturbing of the roots.. just before.. or in my case... now that the heat of summer has hit ... one might presume that a tickle wont put it into shock, with 100 degree temps due any day ... in all reality .. putting the whole plant in shade .. and keeping the pot properly watered.. would be better all around ... exactly how much worse can it get in 3 months ... they are so forgiving.. when it is done at the proper time ... which for you would probably be in october .... ken

Is fall transplanting relatively safe?

I have no idea if winter is tough on them because they are dormant during the winter, so I don't have visible signs of stress like wilting...is cold an issue that gets them - or are they perfectly fine with being frozen and is it winter dryness that affects them most? Either way I suppose I could mulch them up deep.

If you can move them leaving the root balls in tact they will be fine. If they are new bare root plants or you plan to divide then you need to provide them with an extended season similar to extending the growing season for vegetables. You want them to have about 6 weeks of growing time before they go dormant. That will allow the root systems to become established. This means you need to keep the ground temperature in mid-40s or above for that 6 weeks. I've used poly/hoop row covers with good success. Wall-O-Waters work well too.

i forgot..

the suspended animation of frozen soil .... means it is really all one long transplant season ...

in the alternative... you get two seasons of root establishment with fall transplant .. before the heat of next summer ...

just keep them properly watered ... late into fall ... but insure they dont freeze into an ice cube ...
