Get the book The Well Tended Perennial Garden by Tracy Disabato-Aust, preferable buy a copy so you keep it as a reference. She gives detailed information and pics. on exactly how and when to prune/deadhead many kinds of perennials.

Yes, I have that book, and I guess I could spend some time looking for this information. But I was hoping for some help in making this list, thought others might enjoy seeing it. Thank you for your post. I enjoy the experiences from people here, offering many perspectives.

Wow that is a small list plus I can't seem to remember much. But it is a start.

I get a second flush (light compared to the first bloom) of bloom on salvias, nepetas, Stella d'Oros, wild columbine, even a few forget-me-nots here and there. Johnny Jump-ups will bush up and continuously bloom if pinched back. A small shrub, but my potentila fructosa "Pink Beauty" never stops from June to frost. Same for Feverfew, once it starts, will continue through frost if old bloom clusters are deadheaded.

Reblooming perennials are kind of scarce, methinks, especially in parts of the country with shorter growing seasons - do the Knock Out roses bloom continuously? You almost have to plan around using perennials that bloom early, mid-season and late for a succession.

Seems to be largely annuals that really carry you through - the alyssum, petunias, osteospermum, moss roses, "Figaro" dahlias, and statice are pretty lush now.

I think you will find that various perennials bloom very differently and for different periods of time in each part of the country. This said, I recommend that you pay close attention to what performs well around your area. If there is a public garden nearby, go visit it several times throughout your growing season and take a notebook to help you remember what was blooming each time. It's cheaper than trying and throwing away dozens of plants in order to find your ideal palette.

That being said, I would say that you will get maximum color from shrubs and perennials whose color is in their foliage: white, blue, red, purple and golden grasses and carexes; golden and purple berberis; chartreuse ogon spirea; white and yellow variegated hollies; white, yellow, blue hostas; purple oxalis; blue green, grey green, yellow green, purple, and golden ferns; golden and purple weigelias; etc. I use many of these plants as bones in my perennial beds, then mix in long blooming perennials, or ones with good looking foliage around them. I use a fair number of annuals too, as duluth said, especially on the front edge and front half of the border. They will keep the color coming in the inevitable down times.
