Want to genocide my ground cover weeds!
Comments (5)Is this a spreading ground-cover? Or is it random weeds growing from seeds? If it's newly sprouting weeds your best best it to use a chemical called Prodiamine (or other comparable pre-emergent) immediately after killing all the weeds. The weeds can be killed with Glyphosate (RoundUp - name brand), but just be very careful to only spray the weeds and do not touch the shrubbery. If you don't want to use Glyphosate you can hand pull. A strong dose of Prodiamine can stop weeds for about 8 months. Just apply twice per year and you will never have new weeds growing there. If it's a creeping ground cover you should just eliminate it all at once so it can't keep spreading. Glyphosate can do the job (it kills any plant), just don't apply to any leafy vegetation you want to keep. Getting it on tree trunks sparingly is fine, just not the leaves and green parts of desirable plants....See MoreFill raised beds with onsite topsoil, then smother weeds with tarps?
Comments (4)I have really bad grass and weeds that spread by runners so on existing beds, I cover with black plastic to kill the weeds making them much easier to remove but it does require a good spading fork. But for new beds, a good hand weeding tool should be sufficient. I like something similar to a cobra headed weeder. you scrape thru the soil about 1" deep or less. If the weeds are thick, I also use the tool to rake them into piles that go into buckets to dump in our weed pile. If you start doing this when the weeds are just visible, you can just leave them on the soil surface to die. I had much more success with my garlic bed by covering the patch with straw after planting in late October. It will grow up thru the straw but most weeds stay smothered. It doesn't take long to drag a hand weeder between each row. Keep in mind some of the seed is going to drop in via air or birds. I've had new weeds show up (last year a very bad thistle) that had never been in our yard before....See MorePerennial peanut ground cover - weed control
Comments (8)'m told by the Florida Department of Transportation, who uses this along our highways, Their recipe, Per gallon of water, Fusilade (2 0z), Plateau (2 oz) and 1/2 oz Methyl Seed Oil or Ethylated Vegetable Oil } Unfortunately I cannot locate smaller than 1 gallon of the first two ingredients and the larger volumes bring the recipe to nearly $300. I'm still searching for a better solution. The weeds are over running my 400 peanut plugs!...See MoreNew Ground Cover Weed Popping up in the Hosta Bed.
Comments (4)Well as Ken said, better mulch would help. I have found that if you gently pull the the top spreading threads back to the main plant, then you will actually have to dig it up getting all the roots. I know. I dug up ajuga ground cover which I had planted several years earlier. Wow, it was a nightmare. I am convinced I injured my shoulder permanently digging and pulling it out! And in spite of this, I am finding small pieces all over. :-( Lesson learned! debra...See Moremad_gallica (z5 Eastern NY)
