ruby star echinacea

I must say I am highly disappointed in my ruby star echinacea which is supposed to be "A new variety reported to be an improved 'Magnus'. Intense carmine-red horizontal petals surround bronze cones" THAT is what the tag says, right? What crap! Mine just bloomed today ..I bought it from home depot last Sat..does this look carmine red to you?

no, it doesn't..it's more of a pale pink..

anyone else have this happen? think maybe it was mislabeled? If so, then which one is it?

Plants are sometimes mis-labeled by the grower. Other times customers mix up labels.

My Ruby Star is deep pinkish/purple, nothing like the one you posted. I think you got the wrong coneflower.

Charge admission! LOL I don't think it's that highly rated! Thanks for the compliment though. These echinacea have withstood THREE thunderstorms in 2 days! Straight and tall and sturdy even with hail and downbursts of wind that uprooted 3 of our buddleia. I love the deep pink of these, so I'm okay with the color. Cameron

Loropetalum: can it take full southern sun?

Great! I love loropetalum but haven't been able to enjoy mine because of the deer striping the branches. I just checked the ones that I have hidden from the deer and they are blooming for the first time since they were planted in fall 2005. I want to combine 'Ruby Star' echinacea and pink muhly with the loropetalum. The stone used on our house is a PA Bluestone that is called 'lilac heather' and the burgundy/deep pink colors work well with it. These will have our stone chimney in the background and I'll keep the Indian Hawthornes and Robert Poore phlox next to the chimney. We're going to pull a weeping cherry that gets eaten by JBs and is always full of wasps. Thanks!

My Ruby Giant (the next generation after Ruby Star) is also a deep pinkish/purple. They are supposed to take at least a full year if not 2 to show thei full flowering size, but I don't think the color should change. What you have looks like "White Swan" to me.

That is just frustrating, same thing happened to me. I am a landscape designer and ordered some Ruby Stars for a job, they were beautiful and fit their description perfectly. So, I ordered some from a different supplier and took a few home. They are a little darker than yours, but not like the ones I first saw. So, I feel for you.

thank you all very much, i'm gonna have to google white swan..are they a pale pink? doesnt seem a good name for a pale pink flower. These are pretty, I just am very disappointed. Seems to me, all these newer echinaceas are pretty disapponting with how bold the color should be as to how it really is. Well, I just planned out a new bed 14' diameter, and since I'm such a sucker I will be buying others, I hope THEY are not labeled wrong..then again maybe I should just stick with getting plants that already have blooms I can see.

Is it fragrant? It doesn't look like the plain species so it must be something. : ) There's one called 'Hope' that has light pink flowers. Do you remember what other echinaceas Home Depot had when you were there?

I posted a couple weeks ago that one of my Ruby Stars that I ordered this year had one white flower and one dark pink flower. I divided off the stem that had a white flower and replanted it. I didn't expect it to live but it looks ok so far after several days. The white flower on it was definitely "white" not light pink like yours. I think I got two coneflowers for the price of one so I'm not complaining. lol I'm curious whether yours will have all light pink flowers or maybe the rest will be normal. Does it have any more buds?

It is slightly fragrant, but not as much as my magnus.
Christie, you were lucky with yours! Yes mine has more buds, they just havent bloomed yet..I'm curious too, but I doubt I'll get lucky like you, lol.
