Can you say 'snow storm seed snatching'...

... even a couple of times without stumbling? I'm having a hard time even saying it once!

Yet that's what I did tonight. I have been eyeballing the remains of an Astilbe up the road since the blooms faded. They were the prettiest deep dark purple when in bloom this summer. I did take a stalk early in the fall, but the seeds weren't ready.

Took the dogs for a walk in a snowstorm tonight and decided to snatch a couple of stalks. Held them like a bouquet until I got home. After drying them a bit, I discovered that there were still seeds in them there stalks. YIPPEE!!

I must say that this has been the strangest seed snatching I've ever done. I've become a seed snatching wacko!

I've been using the blankets all April against up to 50mph winds, frost and freeze with no problems. The cages aren't buried into the ground; they are supported by 2X4's on the ground sliding through them and 40lb bags of rock on each side of the cages laying on top of the 4X4's. The cages aren't flimsy at all due to our set up. We're going out in about 2 hours to hang the blankets. The cages, 2X4's, rock etc are already in place. We've left them there all month because there's no point taking them down until we are safely out of frost danger in mid May.

LOL I about wet myself all the slipping and sliding. We live in the christamas tree capital of the world. Lots of pines. Anyways we stopped at a stand and got a tree fro ten bucks. We could have cut one but we are lazy and cold this year plus they are fresh. LOL Only came a couple of miles away. We got it all put up and decorated. I will take pic later. Planted a bunch of brug cuttings in the gh. Hey what does RP Stand for in brug language I cant remember what it is. LOL Gab soon ribs and saucerkraut fro dinner yummy....Barb Mary I dont fell sorry for you. Just kidding I do. Stay warm too.

This is by far the most snow I've ever seen in Chicago. Storm totals of over 20 inches are being reported. My downtown Chicago office is closed for the day for only the second time in my 38 years there. I have drifts of over 4 feet in height crossing my driveway. Tonight it is supposed to go below zero so the snow will insulate my perennials nicely. The worst thing, however is that my heat went out this morning. The air intake on the furnace became clogged with drifted snow and after I cleared the intake the furnace would still not run. I called my heating contractor and he said he cannot make any service calls today; the roads are impassable. Fortunately, we have electricity and we can run a space heater. I hope that it is adequate until the service can get here. The birds are huddled in the shrubs near the feeders. I counted 10 cardinals at one point today. It is getting brighter and the wind which had been over 50 mph seems to be dying down. It's a good day to stay in and look at catalogs and old pics. Think Spring! Mark

Hi Charlene, Welcome home from your "trip"! Great story! I bet that honeymoon suite hasn't seen too many couples there with their kids! LOL And glad you're safely back home. I feel so sorry for all the people that are still at DIA---and probably will be for days yet! I'm a flight attendant and had been getting really down because I've been stuck down here on the ground for over a month now because I had surgery on my elbow, but when the blizzard started for real, I was so happy to be "stuck down here on the ground!" It's WAY better than having gotten stuck at the airport and winding up sleeping on the floor up in the domicile---which happened to a whole lot of people (not me) during the March blizzard of '03! Here's my Thornton blizzard story! Since I'm off I didn't need to worry about going out in it, so on Wednesday I just watched the people at DIA on TV all day. Then late afternoon I went out to try to shovel the 12" of snow off my sidewalk thinking (mistakenly) that it would make it easier to shovel the next day. Since I'm not supposed to be lifting anymore than 1 lb. with my left hand, I shoveled it 95% using just my right hand. Never knew you could do that, but you can! Except---one time when I got the shovel full and bent over to pick it up to empty it, I got too much "twist" in it and did something BAD to my back, so I decided to go in the house for a little bit to rest, but when I tried to take a step it hurt too much so I just stood there till it felt a little bit better--and I could move again--and started shoveling again. On Thursday I discovered that blizzards are no respecters of shoveled sidewalks, and when the snow finally stopped around noon, there was 14-16" of snow on my "shoveled" sidewalk, so I put on my eskimo suit and went back out to do it again. My back and the muscles in my right arm were so sore from the day before, that I decided whether I was supposed to or not, I was going to have to use my left arm. The city requires that walks be shoveled within 24 hours, so I was planning to shovel a one shovel wide path down the walk---and that was all. Right after I started, the neighbor across the street who was shoveling his drive started talking to me, and I mentioned that I had had surgery and wasn't supposed to be using my arm---and he went in and got his BIG 15 year old son out and told him to shovel the walk for me. He had it finished in less than 10 minutes---it would have taken me at least an hour like it had the day before! The neighbor asked if I needed the (hip deep) snow on the driveway shoveled, and I told him I didn't--that I didn't need to leave for a week and was just going to wait for the sun to melt it off---this is Denver, after all, and my driveway faces south! Then, early this afternoon I was at my kitchen window--which faces the front of the house--when I noticed that the snow on top of my roses didn't look "smooth" anymore. I can't see my drive very well from inside the house, but I went in the living room where I can see part of it, and the whole drive had been shoveled! I couldn't believe it--and started to cry! I waited until I was sure they were home this evening and went over to verify that it was them---they have two BIG teen boys--and to thank them--and started to cry again! It was so-o nice of them, and was the nicest Christmas present anyone could have given me. It means so much when someone does you a random act of kindness! This summer I'm going to take them some perennials and some produce from my garden. I can hardly wait! I'm sorry you didn't get to Mazatlan, but it's great that you were able to have a fun time anyway. LOL!!! Can't say I've went that far, but I did go out AFTER a snow storm and snatch a few stalks off my Aster laevis sticking up out of the snow...still had seeds on them too :D

my kids are so embarressed when i do that. we were at a fast food place and they had those really cute little dahlias that are multiple colors. so i parked the truck right in front of them as my kids are yelling "no mom" and ducking in the seat. i explained to them that the landscaping people were'nt keeping up on there job so i was helping them. i'm sure they won't come true but what the heck. we were right off a major intersection for going on and off the freeway. kinda embarressed me too but i don't care. i got my seeds!!!

You folks are cute!!

Drippy, It's not cold here! What makes you think that?? LOL! Actually, we are certainly not as cold as the rest of Canada thanks to you guys sending us the weather systems quite often from the eastern seaboard. We love it when you share those lovely warm gulf stream winds with us, and appreciate it in the form of cheering on the Red Sox (my father has been an avid fan ever since I can remember and that's nearly 50 years) every season. Just a few years ago you could also find a good chunk of diehard Boston Bruin fans in the porvince too!

I must say that I did ask the property owner about the seeds when the plants were flowering.

Vera, I had to google the Aster you mentioned. I got quite the giggle because it grows wild here along the sides of the roads in the poorest soil. It sure is a pretty one, eh?!

I still gather seeds from our gardens at this time of year. There's still planty of Astilbes, Echinaceas, Alceas, Buddleias, Inulas, etc. Whatever I don't gather, the little birds eat. It's all good!

oh my!!! LOL i'm laughing sooo hard!! thanks!! i soo needed that!! and my goodness nice to know i'm not the only one who embarrases my family, if i even look at a plant or flower weirdly my husband rolls his eys and just kinda crouches/slumps a little, now the kids, they're like which one, they're little snatcher'rs, theyr'e like which one mom really loud!! LOL unless we are around girls then tabor is like MOMMMM not now, LOL all embarrased!! its so funny, so just then i "HAVE" to have that seed!! LOL

Me??? Walking around collecting seeds in a snowstorm? When hell freezes over!

It was 7 degrees when I left for work this morning. At that temperature I would only stop if my life were in danger. Like a deranged driver trying to mow me down with a Mack truck.

Not a seed.

This is a great thread! :) Made me laugh out loud guys....I think you're all terrific...and Karen, I'm with you....I'm not snatching seed or anything else in that kind of weather! Thank goodness we don't have that kind of weather way down here in the deep south, although we did get snow last Saturday...the first measurable snow since 1993, and that's often enough for this diehard southern gal!! :)

Our low tonight is predicted to be -1. Yesterday the high was around 20. I didn't even get the mail. I left it in the mailbox overnight to avoid walking the 30 ft. to the mailbox. My husband has been out of town, so he'll never know. Of course that !@#$%^ is in Florida for a business trip while I'm here freezing. Normally in the winter it's his job to get the mail.

Karen, I'll be darned if I don't get to that mailbox every day. There's even more seeds in there sometimes!! Tonight it dipped to -15C and I made my way up the road.
