Comments (4)"I have the same issue but with no spark. Plugs are good and new Magneto installed" Are you the guy from another thread who I asked if he was sure he had installed the coil correctly? Plug wires head toward the back of the engine, make a 180 degree turn, come back under the coil and exit the Intake Manifold side of the engine. IF they don't do this, you have the coil on upside down. Walt Conner...See Morebriggs compression release.
Comments (7)Do a couple voltage drop tests. 1-When CRANKING- Red lead on battery + POST, black lead to stud on A- battery cable/solenoid connection B- connection "A" to other solenoid stud C- other solenoid stud to starter motor stud. D- Black lead to Battery ground POST. 2-Red lead to ENGINE ground A- Black lead to frame ground B- "" to battery - post IF you find any readings that seem to increase more than expected, you can narrow things down. Example- Red to battery + POST, black to battery + cable TERMINAL. Just remember to keep the RED lead toward the battery + and the BLACK lead toward battery ground, wherever you are in the circuit....See Morebriggs & stratton won't start too much compression
Comments (52)for most people its valve adjust but for a select few its the engine design itself. the piston gets lubed by the engine splashing oil. if you dont change the oil yearly and are not using the correct weight oil, the top side of the piston and occasionally the head also will create tollerances so tight even the compression release wont be enough for the starter to push thru. usually i sugesst pulling the engine apart and cleaning the piston, valves, rings, and valve head. get then super clean abd put it back together. keep up on the maintence and it should run fine. also check the seloniod, they do go bad and it takes all that CCA to get these engines spinning...See More18hp Briggs twin back pressure issue
Comments (7)Thank you for the replies. @bluemower I'll try the fuel down the cab trick. Fuel flow is working it seems, and I can tell it's intaking some into the carb, as the level is going down. @mownie The valves were not messed with other than I removed some carbon from around there when I replaced the head gasket (and I scraped the pistons clear of same), however I cannot speak to what was done before I bought it. I seem to recall the guy said his father had removed it to work on a leak, or clogged intake (there was lot of grass in there in the shroud). The heads were kind of loose I noticed. The problem with this motor, was that I could never get the flywheel off for a complete look underneath. I had to use an impact wrench to get the nut off, it was rusted, so I replaced that with a new. Tried all manner of pullers though, and none of them would budge the flywheel one iota, they just bent the bolts. The pin did not look sheared. I broke a fin trying to get the flywheel off and so installed new heads from a similar model, they'd only been used 4 hours, from a twin which burnt up because it's oil splasher fell off. I do not have the overhaul and service manual unfortunately. Just one I downloaded from the Briggs site, for electrical. Thanks, Robert...See Moremownie
