Which annual poppy is easiest to grow?
Comments (4)All annual, self-seeding poppies are easy to grow. The perennial "Oriental Poppies" are harder to get going. Probably the easier to grow and also self-seeds to a fault (over the years you might be weeding it out) is the Papaver somniferum var. Paeoniflorum "Pink PeonyPoppy"...beautiful too: poppyemporium.com Each seed will produce a plant with at least 8-10 Poppy Blooms, if your soil is good and well drained, could be 10-20 blossoms per plant, and they blossom for a much longer period than the regular Papaver somniferum. Comments (12)I've read that they don't transplant well. Anyone have comments on that? I personally would like to try winter sowing some, because those I grew in the ground this year fried in the sun. I guess they were too small. I probably started them too late. In zone 5, when would be the right time to sow them in the ground? Can anyone recommend a small variety (not California Poppy--bigger flowers, but not a huge plant)? I have a small garden. Hope it's okay to jump in like this, I thought it would be silly to start a new thread on the same topic. Thanks!...See MoreWant annual poppy seeds

Comments (30)Marcia, Perhaps the morning glories reseeding has to do with the moisture of the soil. I know when I start them from seed, I usually soak the seeds for 12-24 hours. I have on occasion forgotten about them and some rot and others start sprouting and growing in the water. Who knows? The only problem that I have with them reseeding is that they escaped into the vegetable garden and started growing mixed in with the cucumber and beans. I didn't notice until they were pretty tangled and it's such a mess right not. I want to cut them out of there before they set seed because then next year will be even worse. They also came up where I planted some other varieties (Heavenly Blue and Picotee Red(which is pink!) and were smothering them so I couldn't see any of the other colors! I had a snapdragon that self-seeded under our serviceberry tree last year. It was a tall yellow and bent over during the winter and the tip rooted to the ground. The main part died over the winter but the tip grew up tall and strong and made a large plant (there is a picture of it under "S"). Mine is out in the open in a raised bed in the middle of the yard. Go figure! Kimberly...See Morepippi21
