I mentally refer to the Soil, Compost and Mulch forum as the SCUM forum. Am I the only one?

If that scum is white and a bit "fluffy" then it's likely to be yeast. You can tell the difference between yeast and mold. Mold would be the usual blue furry spots floating in the mixture. That would be something to worry about. A brine bag is not only to hold the cucumbers down below the brine, it's also to keep out the air. When you removed it, you exposed the brine to lots of air, which encouraged the formation of yeast. Take out a pickle. Is it firm? Cut it lengthwise. Is it a translucent olive green? Smell it. It should smell good. If it passes all those tests, then taste. If the cucumbers are firm, smell nice and taste good, you're fine and so are they. If you want to use the brine, you need to strain and boil it. I prefer to rinse the pickles and use a fresh finishing brine because the original brine is "funky" to me, but assuming the brine is uncontaminated, you can re-use it. Carol

Finally! Last night I smeared a combination of hot vinegar (microwaved 2 minutes and an equal amount of blue Dawn. I had used it last year (guest bath only used once a year). I followed the directions, just let it sit and the bottom of the tub looked great. It did not budge the insane soap scum on the side of the tub. The tub was only used during Christmas vacation by our adult daughter who never cleaned. I was in panic mode tonight and saw someone above mention Awesome Cleaner from the Dollar Tree. I put a little water in the tub to wet the vinegar/dawn mixture from last night, swished my scrubber pad in it to wet it. Poured Awesome powder on it and thanked God because it worked! I could not believe it worked and was in panic mode because my daughter is bringing her boyfriend in town with her! Now if I could just get the rest of the house presentable!

My goodness, I had no idea. Will any liquid soap do? DH has skin allergies so I am limited to very mild soaps (like unscented Dove bar soap). I hope I won't have to choose between the health of my husband's skin and the cleanliness of my new shower. :-) And while we're on the topic of keeping our glorious new tile clean :-) I wonder what else is good to do? I do have a squeegee and have been using that after each shower. My excellent tile guy also wanted to recommend a spray that can be used regularly to keep mildew etc at bay, but he couldn't remember the name. Does anyone here know of such a thing?

we have tame blackberries and when making wine there scum it is a thick heavy scum on top before we add pectin what is this and what causes this and is it bacteria or something not good for wine making

The term "scum" may refer to a lot of things......no reason at all it cannot be applied here as well in a humorous bent :-)

I saw the title of the thread and assumed you were going to ask if you could put the green scum from the top of a pond or other body of stagnant water into your compost pile.
