Yellowing leaves on my Russian Sage!

I am new to this forum and gardening, so in advance I will apologize for such a newbie question. I just started renting a beautiful house in Albuquerque and there is a drip irrigation system hooked up to much of the zeriscape including a beautiful Russian Sage. Within the last week and half though it's leaves have starting turning yellow along the edges. The drip system is automated and it is hard for me to tell whether it is getting wet during the day. I came home one day and the plant looked droopy, I suspect now because of the intense heat and normal transpiration. I started watering it occasionally by hand. Are the yellow leaves an indication of too much water or too little. Help, my fiance is moving out from the east coast soon, she has the green thumb, afraid I am going to kill one of the more beautiful plants before she can see the garden! Thanks
