1 year oak sapling leafs out much later than parent?

Hello,

In the fall of 2006 I gathered some acorns from a big beautiful white oak a few blocks from my house and planted them directly in the ground. I have one sapling as a result, it grew to be about 5 inches tall last year. This spring it leafed out several weeks after its parent (I thought it was dead)...its leaves are still expanding.

Is it normal for a young white oak sapling to leaf out later than a mature tree? Both are in exposed full sun locations.

I'm not worried about it, just curious if this is something it will grow out of, or did I happen to get a late leafing individual?

Alex
