Compost them!
Seriously, I don't bother with them at all. These bugs/insects are in your compost because they enjoy eating dead and rotting plant material. As far as I'm concerned, they're part of the composting process. And they don't seem to bother live plants, so I don't bother them.

Everything is normal. Increase your browns a little. Got any shredded paper ?

Thanks guys so much for the info! I always recycle my newspaper, but I hadn't thought of shredding it and putting it in my compost, I'll definetly do it now!

Bugs of all kinds are a normal part of the composting process. Learn to love them because without them we don't get compost. ;^)

You got bugs? Well that attests to the quality of your compost. If it's good then all sorts of critters will work on it. Let 'em. They move on when the ingredients change. I've got red worms like out of a bad dream but I leave them to make that black gold they're known for. You're doin' fine.

I've got all sorts of creepy-crawlies in my pile including these HUGE ones which turned out to be stag beetle larvae. More often than not, they're both harmless and beneficial to the composting process, so just leave them be.

Thats great news. I had bugs of all sorts, crickets, centipedes, waterbugs, worms and even a big health toad for a while. It's a good indication of healthy compost.

In spite of all of theis about how great it is to have bugs you can see in your compost keep in mind that all of these need a fairly moist environment to exist, an environment that wil lbe too wet for the aerobic bacteria tht digest your compost material to do the work they need to do. Most often I find if there are visible insects in a working compost pile thre is also a disagreeable odor which should never be present in any compost pile, because that pile is too wet.
Compost does not need to be wet and too much water displaces the air that is also needed. Compost needs only to be slightly moist for the aerobic bacteria you want digesting that material to work. If there is any, even just a whiff of, unpleasant odor the material is too wet.

Speaking of too wet, my 32-gallon garbage can composting experiment is showing one really interesting bit.

First off, the garbage can is littered with 3/8" holes top to bottom, evenly spaced about 3" apart. It's got plenty of breathing room. Secondly, the bugger is in the full sun almost all day in the 100-107(F) weather we've been having and there's been literally no rain in over a month.

I haven't watered it in over two week and when I turn it, other than the top 1/4" the whole thing is still a little more moist than I'm used to. With all this heat, lack of rain and holes everywhere, I would have expected it to dry out but it's holding it's moisture like a CHAMP!

It's also heating up nicely but it's sometimes hard to tell when it's been baking in the hot temps outside in the full sun.

I have 2 or 3 biostacks ready to harvest, and I've been putting it off because they are crawling with ants on the top (dry) layer. They're well-behaved ants (not fire ants), so I did harvest some compost last week, but after a couple hours of brushing ants off, I needed to take a break.

The dry, brown maggoty things are soldier fly larvae. They're very efficient composters, as good as red worms, and later in the year they leave the bin en masse to pupate (and turn into tiny black flies whose only task is to mate, find the compost bin, and lay some eggs). Their main life stage is larval, and their main purpose is to eat.

I love this time of year -- the season of the bottomless compost bin. Every few days it seems I fill up the bin, then a couple days later it's 6 or so inches lower again, so I fill it up again, etc. The composting critters are working overtime!

Soldier Fly larva are used in many places to help digest manure to reduce the manures volume and nutrients. This, in this instance, can reduce the number of common house flies that would lay eggs in this very moist environment. Very simply, for the home composter, the presence of any fly larva in the compost is an indication that the compost is too wet, too moist, and needs to be dried out some.
Your Public Health people would consider Soldier Fly larva an indication of an unhealthy environment.
Soldier Fly larva should not be in a properly built compost pile.
