MTD tractor won't go uphill
Comments (13)I broke down and bought a set of vice grips to hold the spindle then I was able to use them to keep the pulley from turning and loosen the bolt. With a little work the engine pulley came all the way off. The book says to just drop it down enough to get the belt below the belt guard but the belt is no where near long enough to slip over the botton of the engine pulley unless you remove it all the way. The book also failed to mention another belt guard pin back on the variable speed pulley that had to be loosened (or removed) to slip the belt off of there too. Boy was it a pain to get to. I had to play with locking the variable pulley in different speed positions to find one that would let me get to the nut underneath the pin. Anyway, after all that work, I finally got the font belt off and it looks as good as the day the tractor was purchased. 2 hours of fighting with it and I probably didn't need to. The rear belt looks like it went through a meat grinder. I probably only needed to replace the rear belt but I ordered both anyway....See MoreMuffler replacement advice needed MTD tractor
Comments (1)We in the music trade have a saying--"If you don't know how the music goes, play it by ear!" Or: "Hum a few bars, and we'll fake it." If your engine is a Briggs, the usual muffler placement is to a threaded "nipple" that screws into the block, beside the carburetor. When i have to replace an engine, i usually have to go to a hardware store and buy pieces of threaded galvanised pipe, same size as the one that was on the engine. You can buy elbows, sleeves, and pipe, and then cobble up a suitable wxhaust pipe, and screw on a muffler. Threads are the same. I replaced an engine last week. Was on a Craftsman lawn tractor. The original engine was an OHV, the replacement was not. When i went to put the muffler on, the kind that fits in front of and below the engine, in a square hole in the frame, the pipe was too short to let it fit. So, i made a patented "Rusty Jones fix", by sawing the pipe in half, and inserting a nice piece of gold colored tubing in between the two pieces. Works great. Looks nice. Doesn't leak or make noise. I have found, if ya want to succeed in this business, ya have to be tricky, and flexible! And, the hammer is a last resort, to be used only on removing flywheels, or pounding the toes of somebody who wants to watch, and is always in the way! ;0)...See MoreMTD tractor
Comments (18)I know this post is old, but Google felt it was relative to my question. I'm having a problem with the transaxle designed pictured in the drawing and photo shown above. The symptom was the Mower stopped forward motion, and belt was smoking. I replaced the symptom first (a new drive belt) and continued with my unsuccessful diagnosis. I removed the transaxle and watched a half dozen videos of what's going on inside these little buggers. What I found was the reverse gear was wobbleing excessively on the shaft and hitting the bolt and nut that goes through the differential or spider gear carrier and jamming up, stopping the Mower dead in its tracks. I scored a deal on both gears, the shaft and shifter finger on EBay. It arrived but was a right hand shift model. I own a left hand shift. So I could not use the new shaft for the forward and reverse gears, I had to clean up the old shaft best as possible,, it appears ok, but I understand it runs constantly at twice the speed. It maybe on borrowed time. (Trade a right for a left shift axle anyone?) With the transaxle still open and split in half, I drove myself nuts trying to figure out what kept the reverse gear all the way over to one side, as even the new reverse gear ran into the diff bolt. Your above drawing and hand written explication cleared this up for me, THANK YOU! the pinion gear lines all that up and keeps the reverse gear from traveling too far and running into the diff carrier bolt. I discovered all this sitting in the comfort of my Lazyboy while searching on my tablet. As of this moment it's all theory, the transaxle sits open on my workbench out in my cold garage tonight. I will tackle this problem tomorrow, and if it doesn't go well, I will check back here and I'll include pictures, they seem to be the key to some excellent responses. If you guys have picked up on something in my post that is a red flag in my repair that I've gotten wrong or I don't see, please I'm all ears gentleman. Thanks for your time....See MoreMTD Lawn Tractor Problem
Comments (6)Hello All and thanks to tomplum. I sorted out the problem after posting my message and it is worth passing on. I removed the deck and found lots of build up of grass, dirt and barkers eggs dried around the pulley's restricting the movement of the tension pulley. After cleaning the whole thing with my high pressure cleaner I then gave everything a liberal spray of WD40 and reassembled the machine. Now it performs like new again, the moral of the story is cleanup properly after use, a quick hose down does not do....See Morejimengele
