Hi all,

I'm a hoya and succulent collector, but I was hoping you could help me with something regarding AV's. My sister and I are throwing an engagement party for my father at a country club and my sister wants to go all out and put AV's at every table.

She said she either wants one big AV per table or a "bunch" of small AV's in a group. I've only seen small ones...are there big "centerpiece" type ones? Also, she obviously is thinking of getting AV's that are in bloom (I can't imagine foliage plants without color as centerpieces!), so how do I go about finding a whole bunch of those? Do you easily find blooming AV's at nurseries, or do I go through a flower shop? We will need a bunch of them (especially if we are doing small bunches per table), so I'm not sure how to go about this.

If I do go to a nursery to get them, how long before the party should I go? I wouldn't want the blooms to die on me before the party, but I also wouldn't want to take a chance of not finding any.

What do you all think of this idea? Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Easy go to Selective Gardener and place an order for plants in a 4" container.

You need to find an AV club in your city then ask one or more members for their show plants. They have the ability to time flowering so that the plants would be in full flower around the date for the wedding. But this takes time.

Contact the club and ask their advice. Small miniatures are very pretty, too, You could have three in a basket (from the dollar store) that one of the guest might win from each table.

Hi Linda, If you want a humidity tray, I can tell you what I did to make my own. It's pretty simple. I use plastic plant trays (the ones that are 11"x22") and put outdoor PVC drainage grates (see link for example) inside of them. The Lowe's website didn't really have that many, but if you go to any big hardware store like Lowe's or Home Depot you should be able to find them where the PVC pipes are. They come in a lot of different sizes (you don't necessarily have to use the square ones), just find ones that will fit inside of your water trays. They even have round ones for individual plant trays. And it's a lot cheaper than buying a pre-made humidity tray! Interesting question. All plants have an age span-youth, maturity and senescence. This is easy to see in woody plants like trees that do not reproduce themselves but continue to grow on older growth. But non-woodies, like perennials, are constantly reproducing themselves, almost from scratch and they all have an age span as well. African Violets are perennials and as such, would have an age span. It would be interesting to know what the age range in the wild is but I don't know if anyone has ever determined that. In most cases you run two of each cable to each jack so that it can either be a source or a receiver, or both. For example with 2 RG-6 cables you can have that location recieve a signal (e.g., cable TV), but it can also include a device that feeds the signal to other location (e.g., it could be the source for distributing a video signal to another room). When I had AT&T Uverse you also had the option of using Cat 5 instead of RG-6 to distribute the Uverse signal to another room.
